On April 11, 2026, Cross Lab proudly welcomed 10 new members.

We are delighted to welcome two bachelor’s students, five master’s students, one postdoctoral researcher, one research student, and one YSEP student to the lab.

To celebrate, both new and continuing members of Cross Lab gathered for a picnic at Senzokuike Park near our lab on the Ishikawadai campus. Although it was late in the sakura season, the weather was beautiful, and it was a perfect chance to connect and start the new academic year together.

It was a heartwarming gathering, and special thanks to Snehal for organizing this wonderful event.

Congratulations to all our new students. We wish you every success in your studies and research.

今回、学部生2名、修士課程学生5名、博士研究員1名、研究生1名、そしてYSEP（留学生）1名の皆さんを仲間に加えることができ、大変嬉しく思います。

新メンバーの歓迎と親睦を兼ねて、石川台キャンパス近くの洗足池公園にてピクニックを開催しました。桜のシーズンは終わりに近づいていましたが、素晴らしい秋晴れ（※春の陽気）に恵まれ、メンバー同士の交流を深めながら新年度を共にスタートさせる最高の機会となりました。

非常に心温まるイベントとなり、企画・準備を担当してくれたSnehalさんに心から感謝します。

March 26, 2026 – Cross Lab proudly celebrated graduation of three lab members on a beautiful spring day with Sakura blooming across campus. It was the perfect time to gather and recognize the achievements of our fellow students.

We celebrated Haoge and Yuka for completing their master’s degrees and Hiroyuki for completing his bachelor’s degree.

Members of Cross Lab came together at the Ishikawadai campus to take group photos and enjoy the moment. It was heartwarming gathering to mark an important milestone.

We are incredibly proud of all our graduates. We wish Yuka the very best in her next chapter, we are thrilled that Haoge will continue pursuing his PhD, and that Hiroyuki will be staying on with us for his master’s degree.

2026年3月26日 — Cross研究室は、キャンパス内に桜が咲き誇る美しい春の日に、メンバーの卒業を祝いました。学生たちの功績を称え、皆で集うには最高の日和となりました。

修士課程を修了した Haoge さんと Yuka さん、そして学士課程を修了した Hiroyuki さんの卒業を祝いました。

Cross Lab participated in the Japan Society for Educational Technology (JSET) Spring Conference

On March 7–8, 2026, two Cross Lab students, Don and Yuka, attended the JSET Spring Conference at Yamanashi University in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture. The conference brought together researchers in the field of educational technology from across Japan and overseas.

Don presented his study in the international session on interface design for VR learning and gaze tracking. He had the opportunity to connect with researchers from different countries and engage in meaningful discussions.

“It was a meaningful experience to share my work, learn from others, and build stronger connections with my lab members outside our usual setting.”

Yuka presented her master’s thesis research on how avatar facial expressions and backchannel behaviors, such as nodding, influence English Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ speaking anxiety and motivation on an online platform. She also participated in an on-stage Q&A discussion session with fellow students working on related topics.

“Having a 20-minute on-stage Q&A with students researching similar topics was unusual but memorable. Though nervous, it was great opportunity to exchange opinions.”

After the conference, the team enjoyed an uchiage or celebratory dinner together and experienced some of the local food and famous Yamanashi wine.

クロスラボが日本教育工学会（JSET）春季全国大会に参加しました

2026年3月7日〜8日、クロスラボの学生2名、DonさんとYukaさんが、山梨県甲府市の山梨大学で開催された日本教育工学会（JSET）春季全国大会に参加しました。本大会には、教育工学分野の研究者が全国各地、そして海外からも集まりました。

Donさんは国際セッションにおいて、VR学習におけるインターフェースデザインと視線追跡に関する研究を発表しました。さまざまな国の研究者と交流し、有意義な議論を行うことができました。
「自分の研究を共有し、他の研究から学ぶだけでなく、普段の研究環境を離れて研究室のメンバーとの絆を深める貴重な機会となりました。」

Yukaさんは、オンラインプラットフォームにおいて、アバターの表情やうなずきなどのバックチャネル行動の違いが、EFL学習者のスピーキング不安や学習意欲にどのような影響を与えるかについて、修士論文研究を発表しました。また、関連する研究テーマに取り組む学生との壇上Q&Aセッションにも参加しました。
「似たテーマの研究を行う学生たちと壇上で20分間質疑応答できたことは印象的でした。少し緊張しましたが、意見交換のよい機会になりました。」

大会終了後には、メンバーで打ち上げの夕食を楽しみ、地元のおいしい料理や山梨の有名なワインも味わいました。

Cross Lab participated in the 12th Japan–China–Korea Joint Symposium on Clean Energy and Sustainable Environment (JCK 2025)

From Nov 27–29, 2025, Cross Lab members attended the JCK 2025 symposium in Yamanakako, Japan, joining researchers from Institute of Science Tokyo, Dalian University of Technology, Xi’an Jiaotong University, East China University of Science & Technology, and Yonsei University. The symposium was organized by the Science Tokyo Prof. Fumitake Takahashi lab.

The symposium was organized by the Science Tokyo Prof. Fumitake Takahashi Lab, and brought together leading groups in clean energy and environmental sustainability across East Asia.

🔹 Prof. Jeffrey Scott Cross served as Co-Chair.
🔹 Dr. Sasipa Boonyubol chaired a session and presented her JST-AJCORE project with South Africa and Mozambique.
🔹 PhD students Dongkuan Zhang and Eric Kolor delivered oral presentations on neural-network modeling of non-Newtonian fluids and virtual screening of Pd-lean alloy systems, respectively.

The symposium fostered valuable collaboration and discussion on clean energy and sustainable environment technologies.

クロス研究室は第12回日中韓クリーンエネルギー・持続可能環境国際シンポジウム（JCK 2025）に参加しました

2025年11月27日〜29日、山中湖で開催された JCK 2025 に参加し、東京科学大学、Dalian University of Technology、西安交通大学、ECUST、延世大学の研究者・学生と、クリーンエネルギーおよび環境分野の研究成果について意見交換を行いました。

本シンポジウムは東京科学大学の高橋史武教授研究室によって主催され、東アジアのクリーンエネルギー・環境分野の研究者が一堂に会する重要な機会となりました。

We are pleased to announce that Cross Lab successfully exhibited at the 17th Tokyo Shokuiku Fair.

Throughout the event, many attendees had the opportunity to experience doctoral student Don’s VR Fruit App and our educational fruit knowledge game. We received valuable feedback from the public and were also able to exchange ideas and establish meaningful connections with researchers and experts from various institutions.

Don devoted considerable effort to preparing for the exhibition and gained significant insights through our interactions with participants. We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who visited our booth and engaged with our work. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to all supporters who contributed to making this exhibition possible.

We look forward to participating in future events and continuing to share our research with the public.

第17回「東京都食育フェア」において、クロス研究室が無事に出展を終えましたことをご報告いたします。

会期中は、多くの来場者の皆さまに博士課程のDonが開発したVRフルーツアプリおよび果物に関する教育ゲームをご体験いただきました。来場者の方々から貴重なご意見を頂戴したほか、他機関の研究者や専門家の方々とも意見交換を行い、有意義なつながりを築くことができました。

🎉 Cross Lab Students Win Outstanding Presentation Awards at AOTULE 2025! 🎉

Two doctoral students from the Cross Laboratory — Snehal and Eric — represented Science Tokyo at the AOTULE Conference 2025, held at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China (October 13–14).
Hosted by Tsinghua’s School of Aerospace Engineering, the conference explored the theme “Interdisciplinary Education and Practice for Sustainability.” Students from AOTULE member universities formed cross-institutional teams to collaborate and present on key sustainability topics.

• Snehal’s team presented on Smart Cities & Infrastructure Innovation
• Eric’s team presented on Sustainable Materials Design

✨ Both teams received Outstanding Presentation Awards — congratulations to Snehal and Eric for their excellent teamwork and inspiring contributions!

After the conference, participants visited Tsinghua University’s campus and the Forbidden City, capping off an unforgettable international experience.

🎉 クロス研究室の学生がAOTULE 2025で優秀発表賞を受賞！ 🎉

クロス研究室の博士課程の学生2名、SnehalさんとEricさんが、Science Tokyoの代表として、中国・北京の清華大学で開催されたAOTULEカンファレンス2025（10月13日～14日）に参加しました。

清華大学航空宇宙工学部が主催したこの会議は、「持続可能性のための学際的教育と実践」というテーマを探求するものでした。AOTULE加盟大学の学生たちは、大学の垣根を越えたチームを結成し、持続可能性に関する主要なトピックについて協力し、発表を行いました。

• Ericさんのチームは「持続可能な材料設計」について発表

The Cross Lab is pleased to participate in the 17th Tokyo Shokuiku Fair. Doctoral student Don will be presenting his research on using VR, educational games, and AI to support food education. Professor Cross will also be joining the exhibit periodically.

September 22, 2025 – Cross Lab proudly celebrated the graduation of our doctoral student, Muhammad Harussani Moklis.

With the hot summer behind us and the weather turning pleasantly cool, it was the perfect day to recognize Harussani’s remarkable achievement and years of dedication. Members of Cross Lab gathered to celebrate this milestone and share in the joy of the occasion.

Over the years, we have witnessed Harussani grow into an outstanding researcher and a reliable colleague whose dedication and positive spirit have left a lasting mark on the lab. His contributions to advancing sustainable chemical production with the application of AI and ML stand as a testament to both his skill and commitment to impactful science.

It is not quite time to say goodbye, as Harussani will continue with us as a postdoctoral researcher. We are excited to see his contributions to the lab grow even further in this new role.

August 27, 2025 - Professor Cross attended the Japan Society for Engineering Education (JSEE) conference in Kyoto at Kyoto University, where he and the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Testbank Team were honored with the JSEE’s Engineering Education Award.

The award was presented in recognition of the team‘s research and practical implementation of mechanical engineering testing in Japan and Indonesia. Professor Satoru Watanabe of Kyushu University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering delivered the award lecture on behalf of the team.

This recognition highlights the team‘s significant contributions to engineering education. Congratulations to Professor Cross and the entire ME Testbank Team on this well-deserved achievement! From August 4–5, four Cross Lab members—Don, Eric, Haoge, and Snehal—attended the MISW 2025 workshop to present their ongoing research. During the event, the students shared their work with faculty and peers, receiving valuable feedback that will help advance their future projects.

The workshop also provided an excellent opportunity for networking. The students built new connections, made friends, and exchanged ideas with other participants from diverse backgrounds.

Among the presentations, Eric and Snehal’s work stood out for its clarity, depth, innovation, and impressive progress. For their outstanding presentations, both were selected as two of only ten participants to be awarded the prestigious opportunity to attend the AOTULE Workshop at Tsinghua University in China later this year.

Cross Lab congratulates all four students on their hard work and contributions and looks forward to their continued success on the international stage!

8月4日から5日にかけて、クロス研究室のメンバー4名、Don、Eric、Haoge、SnehalはMISW 2025ワークショップに参加し、進行中の研究について発表しました。イベント期間中、学生たちは教員や他の参加者と研究内容を共有し、将来のプロジェクトを推進するうえで貴重なフィードバックや知見を得ました。

このワークショップは、ネットワーキングの絶好の機会ともなりました。学生たちは新たなつながりを築き、友人を作り、多様なバックグラウンドを持つ他の参加者とアイデアを交換しました。

July 25, 2025 - Cross Lab marked an important milestone as D3 student Muhammad Harussani Moklis successfully delivered his public doctoral thesis defense.

His research, titled “Electrocatalytic Reduction of Glycerol Assisted with Machine Learning,” presents an innovative approach that integrates machine learning techniques to advance electrocatalytic processes, contributing to the development of more sustainable chemical production methods.

May 23, 2025 - The Cross Laboratory at Science Tokyo, collaborating with France‘s CNRS Strasbourg and Paris branches 🇫🇷, hosted an inspiring CNRS Organic Chemistry Lecture Series at Science Tokyo’s Ookayama campus!

Three world-renowned experts from CNRS —Prof. Morgan DONNARD, Prof. Arnaud VOITURIEZ, and Prof. Frédéric LEROUX—shared the latest research breakthroughs in a series of lectures. We had a fantastic turnout both in the person and via ZOOM, with participants joining from around the globe!

Everyone gained valuable insights into
• Alkyne functionalization into heterocycles: Discovering new ways to build complex ring structures.
• Gold-catalyzed total synthesis of natural products: Highlighting efficient methods for creating intricate natural compounds.
• Sustainable development of next-generation fluorinated hydrocarbons: Focusing on eco-friendly approaches for essential industrial chemicals.

Cross lab will continue its international activities and looks forward to hosting future lecturers.

2025年5月23日 ― 東京科学大学のクロス研究室は、フランスのCNRSストラスブールおよびパリ支部 🇫🇷 と連携し、東京科学大学大岡山キャンパスにて「CNRS有機化学講演シリーズ」を開催しました！

CNRSから世界的に著名な3名の教授 — Morgan DONNARD教授、Arnaud VOITURIEZ教授、Frédéric LEROUX教授 — をお迎えし、最新の研究成果について講演していただきました。現地参加に加え、ZOOMを通じた国際的な参加者も多数あり、非常に盛況なイベントとなりました。

講演では以下のような貴重な知見が共有されました：
• アルキンの複素環化：複雑な環構造を構築する新たな手法の発見
• 金触媒による天然物の全合成：複雑な天然化合物を効率的に合成する方法の紹介
