This July, DLX Design Lab visited UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science & Technology) in Ulsan, South Korea to run a two day treasure hunting workshop! Students explored how to utilize technologies from two different UTokyo research labs to bring value to society. 🪸 Coral Rescue、Core77 Design Award 2026 Notable受賞！

DLXデザインラボの市民参加型サンゴ保全プロジェクト「Coral Rescue」が、世界的デザインメディアCore77が運営するCore77 Design Award 2026においてNotableを受賞しました。

このプロジェクトは2023年にWired Japan Creative Hack Award 大賞、Re:Design Everything、D&ADなど複数の賞を受賞してきましたが、当時はまだコンセプト段階での受賞でした。今回は実施フェーズも含めた評価であり、NHK Worldにも取り上げていただいた実践の部分も含めての受賞となりました。

実現までに長い時間と労力がかかったプロジェクトだからこそ、世界で活躍するイノベーション分野の審査員の方々に選んでいただけたことは格別の喜びです。プロジェクトに関わってくださったすべての皆さまに、心より感謝申し上げます。今年は奄美大島でのワークショップ実施も予定しています。引き続き応援よろしくお願いします！

🪸 Coral Rescue wins Core77 Design Award 2026 Notable!

Coral Rescue — a citizen participatory coral conservation project led by DLX Design Lab at the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo — has been selected as a Notable at the Core77 Design Awards 2026.

The project was previously recognised by the Wired Japan Creative Hack Award (Grand Prix, 2023), Re:Design Everything, and D&AD — all at a conceptual stage. This Core77 recognition reflects the full arc of the project, including its real-world implementation, which was also featured on NHK World.

This project took years of work to bring to life. Being chosen by a jury of internationally acclaimed innovators means a great deal to our entire team. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey.

An upcoming workshop in Amami Oshima is planned for later this year 🌊

【イベントのお知らせ｜明日開催】
明日6月14日（土）、日本科学未来館にてAICOMプロジェクトのイベントを実施いたします。
AICOMは、東京大学生産技術研究所DLXデザインラボと菅野研究室が共同で推進する、市民参加型AIデータ収集プロジェクトです。AIがどのようにデータから学習するかを、市民の皆さまと共に探求・実践しています。
当日はワークショップ（事前申込制・満員御礼）に加え、AIのデータ取得の仕組みに関する解説展示やAICOM機器の展示を実施します。展示はどなたでも自由にご覧いただけます。
ワークショップでは「Mind the AI Gap」というゲームを中心に実施します。AIには認識できないが人間には伝わる表現を探ることで、AIと人間の知覚の違いを体感的に学ぶプログラムです。

We are pleased to announce that the AICOM Project event will be held tomorrow, Saturday, June 14th, at Miraikan – National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo.
AICOM is a collaborative citizen science initiative by the DLX Design Lab and Sugano Laboratory at the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo. The project explores participatory approaches to AI training data collection, inviting citizens to actively engage in the research process.
The event features an open exhibition on AI data collection mechanisms and a showcase of AICOM systems, alongside a fully-booked workshop programme. The exhibition is open to all visitors — no reservation required.
The workshop centres on "Mind the AI Gap," a game-based learning programme in which participants craft expressions that humans understand intuitively but AI fails to interpret — illuminating the fundamental differences between human and machine perception.
We warmly welcome all who are interested in the intersection of AI, design, and citizen participation.

Tomomi Sayuda, our Research Associate at DLX Design Lab, has been selected as Unit Leader of the Service & System category on the Good Design Award 2026 jury this year. Having served as a juror in this unit for the past two years, she has now been entrusted with the distinguished role of Unit Leader — an honor she is deeply grateful to receive. At the same time, she recognizes the profound responsibility this role carries: shaping the direction of contemporary design and its impact on society. She is committed to approaching the evaluation of every submission with fairness, rigor, and renewed dedication.
