The Philippine Normal University (PNU) warmly welcomed esteemed delegates from Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU), Japan, to formally initiate discussions on the planned Student Exchange Program between the two institutions. The engagement took place on May 3, 2025, at the Office of the University President.
The visiting delegation included Dr. Kayoko Ito, Assistant to the President and Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work; Dr. Noriko Tamura, Associate Professor of Comparative Education; and Ms. Kana Oda, a graduate student and former recipient of the exchange program. They met with PNU officials to explore opportunities for academic and cultural collaboration, with a focus on sustainability and global education.
The proposed exchange program is scheduled to run from the end of September 2025 to the end of March 2026. It aims to provide PNU and Japanese students with enriching cross-cultural learning experiences. Key components of the program include financial support, free accommodation, a student support tutor system, and credit transfer arrangements — ensuring participants receive both academic and practical assistance throughout their stay. Applications for nominations will open this term through the Linkages and International Office.
Another highlight of the meeting was the discussion of the International Collaborative Lesson Design initiative. This innovative academic component encourages students to critically examine domestic and international issues through the lens of sustainability. It also aims to develop students' capabilities in co-creating lesson curricula that address real-world challenges and promote the vision of a sustainable society. Graduate students from PNU will collaborate with their international counterparts to design and implement these lessons.
The engagement was attended by key PNU officials, including Dr. Bert J. Tuga, President of PNU; Dr. Denmark L. Yonson, Vice President for Student Success and Stakeholders Services; and Director Bryan C. Dayuta of the Linkages and International Office.
Dr. Tuga expressed optimism about the long-term impact of the partnership. With shared values in education, innovation, and global citizenship, both institutions look forward to finalizing the program details in the coming months and officially launching a partnership that fosters international cooperation and empowers the next generation of educators.
