As the final lecture of the MJSP Spring/Summer Lecture Series 2026, on July 30 Prof. Megha Wadhwa (Sophia University) delivered a lecture entitled “From Lens to Life: Visual Storytelling and Migration in Japan, Singapore, and Germany”. Drawing from her filmmaking practice in Japan, Singapore, and Germany, she shared fascinating insights into issues of labor, belonging, identity and precarity. Dr. Wadhwa discussed questions of reflexivity, positionality and consent as a researcher in visual ethnography. The analysis of diverse cases from multiple contexts was followed by animated questions from students and faculty.
Dr. Wadhwa’s workshop on 31 July introduced basic techniques for documenting migrant experiences using accessible tools such as phone cameras, advice for conducting of interviews and discussed the role of visual documentation in representing lived experiences of migrants in different contexts.
