【CNCSI New Project: Global Modernities】
We are pleased to share information about the kickoff meeting of "Global Modernities: Narrative Patterns and Cultural Circulation in the Nineteenth Century," a five-year project organized within the framework of CNCSI, a partner organization of the SRC, and the CNCSI–Japan Hub.

The project explores how modern experiences in the nineteenth century were produced, mediated, and circulated through texts, images, and embodied practices, drawing on recent interdisciplinary and comparative approaches in the humanities.

The meeting will take place online on May 30 and will serve as an open discussion space for exchanging methodological perspectives and exploring future directions for collaborative research.

SRC Survival Strategies Studies Seminar "Reimagining Mutual Aid and Solidarity in Kazakhstan"

Abstract: The presentation examines the recent surge of grassroots charitable giving in Kazakhstan through the ethnographic case of a popular mutual aid initiative. It explores how a traditional local practice of collective mutual assistance is being reimagined and transformed into a scalable model of national solidarity through digital crowdfunding and volunteer networks. It also highlights how such citizen-led initiatives reflect ongoing social transformations in the country and its renewed engagement with the historical past.

【International Conference “XVII Gogol Readings”】
We are pleased to share news from the international conference “XVII Gogol Readings,” recently held at SRC’s partner institution, Poltava V. G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University.

The conference was held in a hybrid format, bringing together scholars from Ukraine, Japan, and other countries working on Gogol and related cultural fields. Many Japanese scholars also participated, including Professor Susumu Nonaka, President of the Japan Association for the Study of Russian Language and Literature. From the SRC, Associate Professor Daisuke Adachi and Visiting Professor Madoka Inoue gave presentations in the plenary sessions.

【New Publication by One of SRC’s FVFP Alumni】
We are pleased to share that Julie A. Cassiday, who stayed at the SRC as a FVFP Fellow last year, has recently published a new article in The Russian Review.

The article examines Elena Malisova and Kateryna Sylvanova’s novel "Pioneer Summer" (Лето в пионерском галстуке) and forms part of Professor Cassiday’s broader research on Russophone Boys Love (BL) culture and fandom. The article is available here:

During her stay at SRC, Professor Cassiday conducted research on transnational BL culture in Japan, presented her work at SRC and Waseda University, and explored connections between Japanese and Russophone BL communities and media cultures. A related talk can also be viewed here:
