"The Italian Alumni Association (TUIAA) Welcomes Italian Students to Sendai"

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, the Tohoku University Italian Alumni Association (TUIAA) organized a welcome party and a tour of Sendai for several new students from Italy.

At lunch, Vice President Mr. Davide Bitti, Director Prof. Lorenzo Cavallina, Auditor Prof. Elena Fabbretti, and four students from universities in northern Italy took part in the event. Two other Italian residents living in Sendai also joined the gathering.

The President, Prof. Davide Bassi, was unable to attend the lunch. However, as he participated in this year’s Tohoku University International Awards Reception and had the opportunity to meet and brief the other members of the executive board in person, he was able to send his greetings to the new students through them. He also expressed his enthusiasm following the official recognition of the Italian Alumni Association as a Tohoku University Alumni Association at the Board of Directors and Representatives’ Meeting held on October 3.

The new students were very interested in the activities of the association and enjoyed hearing about life in Sendai from its senior members. After lunch, the group took a walk around the city, where the senior members showed the students where they could find ingredients to satisfy their cravings for Italian cuisine.

After stopping for an espresso, the tour came to an end in Ichibancho.

The students will surely make the most of the advice and experience shared by their senpai, and they have already expressed their intention to join the association and maintain their connection with Tohoku University even after returning to their hometowns.

A Ceremony for the 2026 Tohoku University International Awards and International Alumni Association Award is Held

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the annual ceremony for the 2026 Tohoku University International Awards and International Alumni Association Award was held at Tohoku University Centennial Hall (Kawauchi Hagi Hall) as part of this year’s Homecoming Day celebrations.

On stage, Vice President Prof. Fumihiko Imamura introduced the awardees and their achievements, while President Teiji Tominaga presented the awards. The ceremony was attended by a large audience of faculty members, students, alumni, as well as family members and friends of the recipients.
In his congratulatory speech, President Tominaga emphasized that the recipients’ activities embody Tohoku University’s philosophy and mission of contributing to society through excellence in education and research. He expressed his sincere respect and gratitude for their accomplishments around the world and highlighted the importance of their continued support for the University’s future development as it heads toward its 120th anniversary next year.

This year’s distinguished awardees came from all over the world. In the Individual Category of the International Award, the recipients were Ms. Jemima Kibira (Kenya), Technical Lead and Co-founder of Afya Reach Limited; Dr. Ramsey Lundock (United States), International Publications Editor at the Public Relations Center of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan; and Prof. Mu-Chang Shieh (Taiwan), a distinguished chemical engineer and nuclear science expert who continues to be active in education and research at universities in Taiwan.

For the Science and Technology Award, the honoree was Prof. Yiguang Ju (United States), Robert Porter Patterson Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University and Distinguished Professor at the Institute of Fluid Science of Tohoku University.

For the Special Award, the recipient was Prof. Fumio Ohuchi (United States), Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Specially Appointed Professor (Visiting) for the Global Strategy Office at Tohoku University.

Finally, for the International Alumni Association Award, the winning association was the Indonesian Alumni Association of Tohoku University (IATU), represented by Dr. Muhammad Rifqi.
After the award ceremony, the six awardees participated in the Homecoming Day reception, where President Teiji Tominaga once again praised their achievements. The awardees then gave speeches at the reception, which was attended by more than 70 people.
Moderated by International Exchange Officer Mr. Davide Bitti, they shared anecdotes from their time at Tohoku University and spoke about their many years of dedication to building bridges between their home countries and Japan, particularly through their connections with Tohoku University.

The reception began with a heartfelt toast by Executive Vice President Prof. Toshiya Ueki, who also introduced and explained the logo for the University’s 120th anniversary to the guests.
Many friends, professors, and mentors from the awardees’ time at Tohoku University also joined the celebration, giving them a valuable opportunity to meet again in Sendai. It was a meaningful occasion for the awardees to reconnect with the people who had made their time at Tohoku University so special.

The joyful event concluded with a traditional “Date Ipponjime” led by Vice President Prof. Fumihiko Imamura.
We are already looking forward to next year’s edition, which we hope to make especially memorable as we celebrate Tohoku University’s 120th anniversary. See you in 2027!

On Monday, September 28, 2026, nearly 300 new international students from 48 different countries and regions took part in a Welcome Party hosted by the Tohoku University Alumni & Outreach Office, the Global Learning Center, Knowledge Cast, and the City of Sendai.
Following a brief introduction to the SENDAI Global Lounge and the services and platforms offered by the Tohoku University Alumni Network, students also learned about other university organizations and student groups, including TUSTEM, SLA, IPLANET, and TUFSA.

The party then got underway, giving students the opportunity to meet one another, learn more about the activities of the university's various groups, and enjoy some delicious food in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

The event concluded with a Lucky Draw, where participants had the chance to win original Tohoku University merchandise!
The event was a great success and a wonderful way for newly arrived students to kick off their new lives in Sendai.

Tohoku University President Visits Vietnam to Deepen Partnerships with Leading Universities and Alumni

On Friday, August 28, 2026, President Teiji Tominaga, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, and President-appointed Extraordinary Professor Hitoshi Tanaka visited Hanoi to strengthen connections with Tohoku University alumni and further develop the relationship with Thuyloi University.

Accompanied by Dr. Kieu Minh, a Tohoku University alumna currently working at the Vietnam–Japan Institute for Human Resources Development, the delegation began the day with a visit to the production facilities and offices of LiveSpo PHARMA, a probiotics company founded and led by Dr. Nguyen Anh Hoa, a distinguished Tohoku University alumnus.

President Tominaga was deeply impressed not only by Dr. Nguyen Anh Hoa’s research and work, but also by the great success of the products developed by his team, led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Van Anh, a Tohoku University alumna and Director of the company’s Spobiotic Research Center.

Following the company tour, the delegation attended a networking lunch organized by the Tohoku University Alumni Association Vietnam (TUAAV), which was joined by a number of Tohoku University alumni.

Over lunch, the alumni had the opportunity to speak directly with President Tominaga and other members of the delegation, sharing memories of their time at Tohoku University and their experiences after graduation, while enjoying Vietnamese cuisine together.

After lunch, the delegation moved to Thuyloi University to participate in the Alumni Impact Seminar, where several Tohoku University alumni shared their career paths, achievements, and experiences following their graduation.

The stories highlighted once again how the knowledge, experiences, and relationships gained at Tohoku University have contributed to the alumni’s professional development and achievements, making the seminar a valuable opportunity to further enhance the presence and impact of Tohoku University in Vietnam.

In response to the strong interest shown by students at Thuyloi University, information was also provided on study and educational opportunities at Tohoku University.

President Tominaga then held a Presidential Meeting with the leadership of Thuyloi University, headed by Rector Nguyen Trung Viet, who also serves as Chairman of TUAAV and was one of the recipients of the 2025 Tohoku University International Award.

The day concluded with a dinner hosted by Thuyloi University on campus, providing participants with an opportunity to exchange ideas and deepen their connections in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Throughout the visit, President Tominaga and his delegation had the opportunity to witness first-hand the passion and strong commitment that Thuyloi University and the Tohoku University Alumni Association Vietnam (TUAAV) have toward Tohoku University.

The visit further strengthened the longstanding ties between Tohoku University and Vietnam and opened the door to new opportunities for alumni, researchers, and students in the years to come.

Tohoku University President and Delegation Strengthen Ties and Promote Collaboration with the Alumni Association (IATU), Leading Universities, and the Embassy in Jakarta

From Tuesday, August 25 to Thursday, August 27, 2026, President Teiji Tominaga, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, and Vice President Fumihiko Imamura (Representative Director of the Alumni Associations) visited Jakarta to strengthen Tohoku University’s connections with local institutions and alumni in Indonesia.

The visit began with a dinner attended by representatives of institutions involved in student exchange and Japan–Indonesia relations, including JICA, the Japan Foundation, and the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, as well as representatives from Universitas Indonesia, IPB University, and Bandung Institute of Technology. At a traditional restaurant in Jakarta, President Tominaga and his delegation had the opportunity to hear about the current situation surrounding academic exchange between Indonesia and Japan and discuss its recent developments.

On the second day, August 26, President Tominaga and the university delegation visited Universitas Indonesia.
The meeting brought together university leaders and Tohoku University alumni at Universitas Indonesia to discuss the further expansion of the partnership between the two universities and new opportunities for long-term collaboration.

The current Rector of Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Heri Hermansyah, is a Tohoku University alumnus who was honored with the Tohoku University International Award in 2025 in recognition of his distinguished achievements and contributions. Following the meeting, Universitas Indonesia hosted the delegation for a networking lunch and campus tour, providing an opportunity to experience first-hand the impressive facilities and infrastructure of one of Indonesia’s leading universities.

Finally, following a visit to the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia and a meaningful conversation with the Ambassador, Tohoku University and the Indonesian Alumni Association of Tohoku University (IATU) brought together more than 40 alumni, university leaders, government representatives, and invited guests for “Tohoku University–IATU: Meet and Connect”, a networking dinner held in the heart of Jakarta.

From reconnecting with old friends from Sendai to meeting alumni from different generations, disciplines, and regions, the evening was a reminder that the Tohoku University spirit continues far beyond graduation.

The gathering also provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties between alumni and Tohoku University while building bridges for future collaboration in education, research, innovation, disaster resilience, and Japan–Indonesia exchange.

President Tominaga and his delegation had the opportunity to witness first-hand the passion and strong commitment that Indonesian universities, institutions, and alumni have toward Tohoku University and Japan more broadly.

The visit further strengthened the longstanding ties between Tohoku University and Indonesia and opened the door to many new opportunities for students, researchers, and alumni in the years to come.

On July 21, 2026, four alumni, Fiorella Patricia Cárdenas Toro, Hanpadungdhama Nathawan, Omar Bazavilvazo, and Oscar Gomez, returned to Sendai and Tohoku University to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their time as students.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the "Old Kaikan" building, the alumni were welcomed as special guests at the final Students & Alumni Lunch Meeting of the semester.

During the gathering, they introduced themselves and shared stories about their time in Sendai and at Tohoku University, reflecting on their student experiences, career journeys, and the lessons they had learned along the way. Their talks were followed by a soba-making demonstration before everyone enjoyed lunch together.

In total, 35 participants from countries around the world joined the event. For the students, it was a valuable opportunity to learn directly from alumni who had once walked the same path. For the alumni, it was a meaningful chance to see today's students and, in many ways, catch a glimpse of their younger selves, as if stepping back in time for a few hours.

The Alumni & Outreach Office is always delighted to welcome Tohoku University alumni back to their alma mater. We are proud of the achievements of our graduates around the world and look forward to creating many more opportunities for alumni to reconnect with the University and inspire future generations.
