This program is part of the "CAMPUS Asia Plus Program," a project supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Its mission is to nurture "multimodal global leaders"—individuals capable of strategically selecting and utilizing knowledge and skills acquired through diverse perspectives in the fields of education, research, healthcare, industry, and administration.

Marina Shikine, a 5th-year student at the School of Dentistry, has been certified as a Tohoku University Global Leader.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the second "Tohoku University Global Leader Education Program (TGL Program) Global Leader Certification Ceremony" for FY2025 was held at the Katahira Kitamon Kaikan.
This time, 21 students were certified, including Marina Shikine, a 5th-year student from the School of Dentistry.

Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry and University of Zurich Center for Dental Medicine Sign Memorandum of Understanding

The Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Zurich Center for Dental Medicine, formalizing a strategic partnership to advance research collaboration and academic exchange between the two institutions.

The MoU was signed on Friday, January 16, 2026, by the Dean of the Graduate School of Dentistry, Professor Ken Osaka, and the Director of the Center for Dental Medicine at the University of Zurich, Professor Mutlu Özcan. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to fostering excellence in dental education, research innovation, and the global exchange of knowledge and talent.

During the signing ceremony, both deans highlighted the complementary strengths of their institutions and emphasized the value of international collaboration in addressing current and future challenges in dentistry. The MoU establishes a framework for joint research initiatives, faculty and student exchanges, and cooperative academic activities that will enrich educational experiences and accelerate scientific progress.

As part of the visit, Professor Özcan delivered a distinguished lecture titled “The Impact of Advances in Material Science and Technologies on the Dental Profession: From the Past to the Future.” The lecture provided an insightful overview of the evolution of dental materials and technologies and offered a forward-looking perspective on how emerging innovations are poised to shape the future of the dental profession. The presentation was received with strong interest and engagement from faculty members, researchers, and students.

The Graduate School of Dentistry at Tohoku University warmly welcomes this new collaboration and looks forward to the opportunities it will create for meaningful academic exchange and impactful research. Sara Ambo, a graduate student in the Department of Molecular and Regenerative Prosthodontics, has received the JADR/GC Young Investigator Award.

This award was established by the Japanese Association for Dental Research (JADR), a division of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), and is sponsored by GC Corporation. Its purpose is to encourage young researchers who contribute to the advancement of dental science.

Fan Ziqiu, a 4th-year PhD student in the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, has been awarded the "2024 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad."

This award is considered the highest honor for Chinese students studying overseas. It is granted only to researchers who have achieved exceptionally outstanding results among over 120,000 Chinese international students.

【News】1st Trans-Pacific Dental Research Symposium — A Milestone Achieved

On November 27, we successfully hosted the 1st Trans-Pacific Dental Research Symposium between Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry (Japan) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile – School of Dentistry. It was an inspiring and historic event!
With outstanding presentations from researchers in both Japan and Chile, covering topics such as periodontal tissue regeneration, oral microbiome metabolites, orofacial pain research, and dentinal glycation mechanisms; this symposium showcased the strength of international collaboration and the shared commitment to advancing dental science.
This first edition marks the beginning of a long-term partnership built on academic excellence, student exchange, and impactful research across the Pacific. We are confident that this will be the first of many collaborative academic activities between our institutions.
A sincere thank you to all speakers, session chairs, organizers, and participants who made this event possible.

The program introduced a novel method using hydrogen peroxide combined with blue laser for effective bacterial sterilization, and highlighted cutting-edge developments in dental healthcare.

【News】Visit from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan

On October 23, Professor Chuang Shu-Fen, former Dean of the College of Dentistry at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan, visited the Graduate School of Dentistry to deliver the renewed Academic Exchange Agreement and Student Exchange Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Graduate School of Dentistry. She was welcomed by Dean Ken Kosaka and Assistant-Dean Guang Hong. During their meeting, they exchanged views on future collaboration and agreed to strengthen multi-disciplinary cooperation, extending beyond dentistry to include fields such as disaster science and biomedical engineering.
