Waseda University was founded in 1882 by Shigenobu Okuma who advocated the "harmony of western and eastern civilization". Today, a century after its foundation, Waseda University is promoting university reform under the three concepts, "Asia-Pacific", "media network", and "institutionalization of lifelong learning" for the realization of a "glocal university * ", which is also the university's sec
ond founding principle. The Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies was established in July 1997 to embody one of the concepts of Waseda University's reforms, "Asia-Pacific". The Institute of Social Sciences and the Institute of System Sciences together constitute the core of the Institute. The Institute of Social Sciences has long pursued research in the field of social studies concerning modern Japan and other Asian regions, while the Institute of System Sciences has a proven reputation in business education targeting working people and is entrusted with collaborative research from industry and government. Furthermore, in April 1998, the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, which the Institute is parental, was inaugurated as the university's first independent graduate school.. The graduate school's basic philosophy is to "conduct interdisciplinary research on issues centering on the Asia-Pacific region in the areas of history, politics, economy, industry, business management, society, culture and international relations, from both global and regional perspectives", while cultivating professionals with high expertise who can share their findings with the society, contributing to the overall development of human society. Previously there were two majors, the International Business Administration (Waseda Business School) and International Relations, but the International Business Administration major was integrated into the Graduate School of Commerce and became a business major as of April 2007. Admission to the graduate school is conducted by the Admissions Office according to its rules. Admission takes place twice a year, in April and September. The graduate schools employ a quarter system; both Japanese and English courses are provided, making it possible to earn necessary credits for the completion of the Master's Degree by only taking English courses. We welcome international students from all over the world not to mention from the Asia-Pacific region, and deliver a distinctly unique innovation with preemptive strategies to meet the requirements of globalization with both software and hardware, such as the use of leading-edge information communication technologies. In addition, the Graduate School and the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies operate a "Supporting Partner System" which links the university with enterprises and other organizations. The purpose of the "Supporting Partner System" is not limited to soliciting support of our research and educational activities, but also to avail our partners with the fruits of the institute's research and know-how in the partnership, and enhance societal contribution through mutual development of the university and our supporting partners.

早稲田大学は、「東西文明の調和」を唱えた大隈重信によって1882年に創立し、1世紀以上を経た今日、第二の建学とも言うべき「グローカル・ユニバーシティ*」を実現すべく、「アジア太平洋」「メディアネットワーク」「生涯学習機関化」という3つのコンセプトのもとに大学改革を推進しています。
アジア太平洋研究センターは、この大学改革のコンセプトの一つである「アジア太平洋」を具現化するものとして、長年にわたって近代日本の社会科学的研究およびアジアの地域的研究を進めてきた＜社会科学研究所＞と産官界からの受託研究・共同研究をはじめ、社会人を対象としたビジネス教育の実績を持つ＜システム科学研究所＞を母体として1997年7月に開設いたしました。
さらに1998年4月には、この研究センターを母体とし、本学最初の独立大学院として大学院アジア太平洋研究科を設置しました。本大学院の基本理念は、「アジア太平洋を中心とする地域の歴史、政治、経済、産業、経営、社会、文化および国際間の諸問題を、グローバルかつ地域的な観点から学際的に研究」するとともに、その研究成果を社会に還元できる高度の専門知識をもった職業人を養成し、広く人類社会の発展に寄与することです。
本大学院は、修士課程と博士後期課程で構成されており、国際経営学（早稲田ビジネススクール）と国際関係学の二専攻から成っていましたが、国際経営学専攻は2007年4月から大学院商学研究科へ統合し、ビジネス専攻となりました。
大学院入学者の選考は、アドミッションズ・オフィス（入学認定委員会）方式により実施しています。入学時期は年2回（4月・9月）、学期は春夏秋冬の4学期制（クォーター制）、そして履修は、日本語のみならず英語による授業のみで修士課程修了に必要な単位の修得が可能です。アジア太平洋地域を中心に世界各国からの留学生へ門戸を開放し、さらには最新の情報通信技術の活用等、ソフト面、ハード面双方において国際化時代を先取りした、究めてユニークな新機軸を打ち出しています。
また本大学院・研究センターでは、大学と企業・機関等との新たな連携システムとして、「サポーティング・パートナー・システム」を運営しております。
この目的は、研究・教育活動を賛助していただくだけではなく、サポーティング・パートナーの名にふさわしく、本センター・大学院の活動成果やノウハウを利用していただき、大学とサポーティング・パートナーの皆様が共に発展することで、社会への貢献を深めることにあります。
