Nowadays, unionoida’s habitats is decreased drastically by canals rehabilitation (e.g. concrete lining) and other environmental impacts, although unionoida plays important roles in freshwater ecosystem such as a spawning substrate for some species of fishes and water purification by filtrating suspended substances.
In terms of biodiversity conservation, the design method to harmonize securing the habitats with maintaining canals function is required. The subject of this field research is to explain the relationship unionoida population and sedimentation on the canal-bed.

This is one of thousands of irrigation ponds in Takamatsu City. It has no stored water because of artificial drainage in early winter after paddy harvesting. The drainage has several roles such as maintenance of irrigation facilities, water quality improvement, and fishing.

Every irrigation pond constructed with earth is vulnerable to natural disaster such as heavy rain and earthquake so that the ponds that not be used for irrigation supply nor be maintained periodically are very likely to be abandoned. Though an ordinary measure of abandonment is a bank excavation not to store water, the care to aquatic livings’ habitat through keeping shallow water within the disaster prevention may be possible.

This reservoir named Honen-Ike (Honen Irrigation Pond) in Kagawa Pref. that was designated as one of the Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese Government in 2006, has unique dam structure that consists of gravity dams and arch dams.

A student in our lab. has an interesting challenge on the visualization of comfortable soundscape of water flow for his bachelor’s degree.
There are various soundscape in a river depended on several physical conditions such as cross section of a river, roughness of a river bed, and velocity and depth of flow.
This research is expected to find out a comfortable soundscape in a river by a sensory testing based on sound samples gathered in a river and to estimate the physical condition which be capable of generate such a soundscape, and to visualize a comfortable soundscape by a frequency spectrum analysis. 😊

Today’s field survey in a river is first time for newcomer in our laboratory under comfortable weather without heavy cold wind.
An equipment that they made by themselves with senior student’s suggestions is used to measure the shape and volume of the riverbed. Throughout the field survey, they found out several problems to get accurate data, so that they studied to solve the problems.

Today, a diploma is conferring on an individual graduate student at a familiar classroom in Faculty of Engineering, although the graduation ceremony in Kagawa University was cancelled to prevent the COVID-19 virus spreading. Congratulations on your graduation and best wishes for your bright future!

The year-end party was held yesterday’s night, December 28. All the member of our lab participated in the party, even though the end of the year is near at hand.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV）such as a drone is going to be adopted to monitor the embankment of the Kagawa Canal Regulating Reservoir managed by the Japan Water Agency.
The new-comer students in our Lab. could get a chance to operate the drone. The drone’s good operability and stability was surprised me.
