Using ultrasound from one side only, we levitated and moved an object in mid-air about 40 cm from the source, roughly six times farther than previous single-sided methods.
Conventional acoustic levitation traps objects at pressure nodes between opposing sources or reflectors. We do the opposite: the object is trapped in the high-pressure region at the center of a zero-order Bessel beam, which keeps its narrow high-pressure core over a long distance. This is the first demonstration of this reversed principle in air, and it opens up non-contact handling of objects in open space, for lab automation and volumetric displays among others.
