The most common chord progression in Western music is I–IV–V–I (e.g., C–F–G–C).

But here are the big 4 you'll hear everywhere:

· I–V–vi–IV (The "Pop Punk" progression): C–G–Am–F. Used in Let It Be, No Woman No Cry, and countless pop songs.

· I–IV–V (The 12-Bar Blues): C–F–G. The foundation of rock & roll (think Johnny B. Goode).

· I–vi–IV–V (The "Doo-Wop" progression): C–Am–F–G. Classic 50s sound (Stand By Me, Earth Angel).

· ii–V–I (The Jazz progression): Dm–G–C. The standard turnaround in jazz standards.

Pro tip: To make any progression sound "sadder," use minor chords (e.g., i–VI–III–VII in Am–F–C–G). To sound "epic," use IV–V–vi–I (F–G–Am–C).
