The Moi University Africa Multiple Research Centre held its second Africa Colloquium seminar on June 16th 2026. The presenter, Dr. Francis Owakah of the University of Nairobi, excavated Rev. John Gatu’s 1972 call for African self-reliance, which he then subjected to critical scrutiny.
In the talk, which he titled _From Dependency to Dignity: Jitegemea and the African Renaissance_, Dr Owakah revaluated Rev. Gatu's challenge to African churches to move from mission dependency to self-supporting, self-governing, and self-propagating models as one among several anticolonial and decolonial ideas and practices. He called for serious appraisals of these innovations in the light of the political, social and ethical debates raging in Kenya at present.
