The University was established as a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi via a Legal Notice No. 65 of 17th June 2011 by His Excellency the President. EUC is the successor of the former Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College established in 1947 as an agriculture training school for pre-service training at certificate level to Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE) student

s.Later in 1968, the Centre was renamed Embu Institute of Agriculture and started admitting secondary school leavers for two-year certificate training as Technical Assistants. In 1990, it was up-graded to an Agricultural Staff Training College whose mandate was to develop and implement short management and technical courses, and offer research and consultancy services to enhance performance in the agricultural sector. This continued until June 2011 when the College was converted to Embu University College through a Legal Notice No. 65 of 17th June, 2011. The EUC council was inaugurated after its upgrading from Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College by President Mwai Kibaki. Friday, 7th October, 2016 became a historic day for Embu University College. This day marked the transition of the Institution from a Constituent College of UoN to a fully- fledged University. The University of Embu was formally awarded a Charter by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta at a colorful function held at State house, Nairobi. The objective of the University is to play a leading role in the development and expansion of the opportunities for higher education and research in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Water and Biological and Physical sciences. The University will develop into a centre of excellence for learning and research in agriculture and farming systems within and outside Kenya.

The University of Embu today hosted a delegation from Hand in Hand East Africa on a courtesy visit aimed at exploring strategic areas of collaboration and partnership.

The four-member delegation, led by Embu Branch Manager Mr. Christopher Mwaniki, was received by the Dean of the School of Business and Economics, Prof. Kennedy Ocharo on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor.

The meeting also explored opportunities for collaborations in community outreach to farmers, enterprise development, applied research as well as knowledge-sharing through seminars, workshops, conferences, and public forums. These initiatives are expected to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, skills development, and sustainable community transformation. The aim is poverty alleviation through enterprise development in agricultural value-chain and job creation.

The University of Embu remains committed to building meaningful partnerships that create lasting impact and contribute to socio-economic development within the region and beyond.

A delegation of five officials and eight student leaders from Meru University of Science and Technology visited University of Embu on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, to benchmark the Universityโ€™s Electronic Student Voting System. The delegation was led by the Registrar, Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Stephen Karanja.

The team was received by the Dean of Students, Prof. Fredrick Njoka, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Mugendi, alongside the Head of ICT, Mr. Maurice Murimi among other University Staff. .

During the visit, the delegation was taken through the University of Embuโ€™s Electronic Voting System, which has been successfully operational since 2020. The benchmarking engagement offered a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and the sharing of best practices in leveraging digital solutions to strengthen student leadership elections and institutional governance.
