The University was established as a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi via a Legal Notice No. 65 of 17th June 2011 by His Excellency the President. EUC is the successor of the former Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College established in 1947 as an agriculture training school for pre-service training at certificate level to Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE) student

s.Later in 1968, the Centre was renamed Embu Institute of Agriculture and started admitting secondary school leavers for two-year certificate training as Technical Assistants. In 1990, it was up-graded to an Agricultural Staff Training College whose mandate was to develop and implement short management and technical courses, and offer research and consultancy services to enhance performance in the agricultural sector. This continued until June 2011 when the College was converted to Embu University College through a Legal Notice No. 65 of 17th June, 2011. The EUC council was inaugurated after its upgrading from Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College by President Mwai Kibaki. Friday, 7th October, 2016 became a historic day for Embu University College. This day marked the transition of the Institution from a Constituent College of UoN to a fully- fledged University. The University of Embu was formally awarded a Charter by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta at a colorful function held at State house, Nairobi. The objective of the University is to play a leading role in the development and expansion of the opportunities for higher education and research in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Water and Biological and Physical sciences. The University will develop into a centre of excellence for learning and research in agriculture and farming systems within and outside Kenya.

The University of Embu, hosted 50 women from Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO) for a capacity-building training from Monday, 3rd August to Friday, 7th August 2026 under the Mama Kitchen Garden Initiative.

The training is equipping participants with practical skills to establish and manage Kitchen Gardens, enhancing household food and nutrition security, strengthening livelihoods, and building resilience to the effects of climate change.

The programme featured both theoretical and hands-on practical sessions, including demonstrations at the Universityโ€™s kitchen garden facilities. The initiative aims to empower women as champions of climate-smart agriculture, sustainable food production and resilient households.

The University of Embu remains committed to community extension to transform knowledge into practical solutions that improve livelihoods and strengthen communities.

The University of Embu has welcomed a delegation from the State Department for Public Service and Human Capital Development for a fact-finding visit on the University's Integrated Digital Management Portal.

The visit follows the Portal's outstanding recognition during the Africa Public Service Day celebrations. It was particularly commended by the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital and Special Programmes, who identified it as a potential benchmark for modernising public service operations across the country.

The visit provides an opportunity to showcase the University's innovation in enhancing service delivery and driving digital transformation across the public sector.
