We visited the University of Nairobi Kikuyu campus and the Presbyterian University of East Africa. Our goal was to experience the two universities first-hand — from security and customer service to infrastructure and the general environment.
So, we decided to pose as someone looking for admission into a Bachelor’s degree in Education (full-time).
Our first visit was PUEA. We arrived at the main gate at around 8:00 am. The security men were extremely professional. We sought assistance getting to the admissions office, and we were directed there. The admin block is just a three-minute walk from the gate.
Everything looked extremely organised. The environment was serene, there were not many students around, first-years were still being onboarded, and the only visible group were first-years and likely continuing students wearing badges who were supporting them.
In a short while, we were at the admin block.
To our surprise, we found the receptionist, a lady with a great heart, already seated and ready to receive visitors. We told her we were looking for the fee structure for a Bachelor of Education. She told us that it would normally be issued by the finance office, but somehow still said she could help. Within two minutes, she had printed the fee structure and explained everything we needed to know.
What surprised us was that first-year male hostels were still available.
If she is reading this, it’s the old man who told you that he would share the fee structure with other people we know. And we’ll do it tomorrow. 😄
After getting the letter, we decided to take a walk and experience the environment.
PUEA is not a huge university, so you can walk around the entire place in about 20 minutes. Everything was in order. The environment is serene and conducive for learning. The washrooms were clean, the grass was trimmed, the buildings were properly maintained ...… Yaani, everything felt in place.
Honestly, if we were real parents, we’d feel proud leaving our child there.
After about 30 minutes, we left for the University of Nairobi Kikuyu Campus, which is a few meters away. In under five minutes, we were already there.
At the main gate, the security guys were welcoming and had fewer questions compared to PUEA. They guided us to the admissions block, which was about a five-minute walk away.
The environment is beautiful : green grass and fairly beautiful forest cover. In less than five minutes, we were at the admin block.
At first, we didn’t even know which one was the admin block. The buildings there looked forgotten, the parking lot had only one car, and there were tens of first-year students waiting to be admitted just outside the security office at the entrance.
We asked if we could get an admission letter and were told to wait since the office was closed. We waited for some minutes and checked again to see if the offices had been opened, but I’m vain.
We gave up and decided to just walk around and see the environment.
We started with the halls and hostels just next to and behind the admin block.
Meni … the buildings looked old, empty, and you couldn’t really tell whether they were still in use. There is very little maintenance going on, and the roofs and paint already had mould. Save for one or two buildings just next to the main gate, most of the place looked like it needed serious attention.
We also saw offices with condemned asbestos roofing, which is a concern because of the well-documented health risks associated with asbestos exposure.
At around 9:15, a second car pulled into the parking lot. It was a maroon car, we think a Volvo, and we saw the excitement from some of the students. It was either the lady was one of the people in admin or a lecturer.
At this point, we couldn’t wait any longer, so we decided to leave.
It’s worth noting that the security guys are doing a great job, .... extremely dependable, sharp and very professional.
As we were heading out, we asked ourselves:
if it were true that we had a child joining campus to study a Bachelor’s degree in Education, which university would we have trusted?
The answer was obvious: PUEA.
At PUEA, we would go home knowing our son is in safe hands, in a safe environment, and in a place where the basics work — from reception to hostels.
Simply put, a lot needs to be done at UoN.
It feels like it is living on its former glory, and perhaps doing much better in postgraduate education. But from what we experienced, it is definitely struggling when it comes to undergraduate studies.
