Welcome to the Wildlife Genomics Workshop 2026

🌍🔬 Pwani University Biosciences Research Centre (PUBREC), in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science, is proud to announce the 4th Annual Hands-on Wildlife Genomics Workshop, taking place from 10th to 14th August 2026.

Having successfully hosted the workshop for the past three years, Pwani University has established this programme as a flagship in environmental DNA (eDNA) and wildlife genomics training.

This year’s edition will bring together 30 participants from nine African countries for immersive hands-on training, knowledge exchange, and collaborative research.

✨ The workshop reaffirms Pwani University’s commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, and capacity building across Africa.

Project (ENabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise) Tier 3 learners
A new chapter begins today as we are delighted to welcome Cohort 3 of the ENGAGE
Project (ENabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise) Tier 3 learners to Pwani
University as they begin an exciting four-week journey in Artificial Intelligence and Data
Science.
The learners took their first step by exploring the fundamentals of Artificial
Intelligence and its applications in Public Health—setting the stage for weeks of learning,
collaboration, innovation, and hands-on problem-solving.
ENGAGE Project KE is empowering the next generation of women in AI and Data Science to develop innovative solutions for real-world health challenges in
Kenya and beyond. The project is led by University of Nairobi in
partnership with University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and funded by Takeda.
It is a privilege for Pwani University to be one of the host institutions supporting this
transformative initiative. We are excited to journey alongside these bright and ambitious
young women as they strengthen their technical skills, build meaningful networks, and
prepare to become future leaders in AI and Data Science.

The National Bioeconomy Strategy Write-shop Ceremony: Keynote Address by Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, EBS

The National Bioeconomy Strategy Validation Write-Shop officially commenced at Pwani University, with Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, EBS, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation (SDSRI), delivering the keynote address.

The Principal Secretary emphasized the transformative role of the National Bioeconomy Strategy in driving Kenya's sustainable development through science, research, technology, and innovation. He noted that the Strategy provides a coordinated framework for strengthening governance, mobilizing investment, promoting innovation, and fostering collaboration among government, academia, industry, development partners, and local communities. He also commended the National Bioeconomy Strategy Technical Working Group and stakeholders for developing the draft Strategy and called for continued collaboration towards its successful validation and implementation.

Following the keynote address, Prof. Abdulrazak led a symbolic tree planting exercise at the Pwani University Biogas Unit, reaffirming the Government's commitment to environmental conservation, climate action, and the sustainable management of biological resources.

Earlier, Dr. Roselida Owuor, Chairperson of the National Bioeconomy Strategy Technical Working Group, welcomed participants and outlined the objectives of the validation exercise. Mr. Mwendwa Kelly, representing the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing Kenya's bioeconomy agenda, while Prof. James HP Kahindi, the Vice-Chancellor of Pwani University reaffirmed the University's commitment to research, innovation, and sustainable development.

The morning session concluded with a group photo, symbolizing the strong partnership among government, academia, industry, researchers, and development partners in advancing Kenya's bioeconomy.

Welcome Remarks - The National Bioeconomy Strategy Write-shop Ceremony
The Vice-Chancellor of Pwani University officially welcomed participants to the National Bioeconomy Strategy Validation Write-Shop, expressing the University's appreciation for hosting this important national initiative.
In the welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed Pwani University's commitment to advancing research, innovation, and collaborative partnerships that support Kenya's sustainable development agenda. The Vice-Chancellor noted that the development of a National Bioeconomy Strategy presents a unique opportunity to harness the country's rich biological resources, scientific expertise, and innovation capacity to drive economic growth, environmental sustainability, food security, and job creation.
The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized the critical role of universities as hubs of knowledge generation, research, capacity building, and technology transfer, and encouraged participants to engage constructively in validating a strategy that will guide Kenya's bioeconomy development over the next decade.

📍 DAY 2 - National Bioeconomy Strategy Meeting
Day Two of the National Bioeconomy Strategy Preparatory Retreat focused on strengthening the implementation framework that will guide Kenya's bioeconomy agenda over the next decade.
The Technical Working Group and Secretariat reviewed key institutional arrangements, including the proposed Steering Committee, Technical Committee, National Bioeconomy Institute, and the role of County Governments in implementing the strategy. Discussions also covered financing and resource mobilization, as well as the Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Learning (MERL) framework and risk management measures to ensure effective implementation.
The afternoon session culminated in the finalization of the Zero Draft National Bioeconomy Strategy and Implementation Matrix, followed by preparations for the multistakeholder validation write-shop through the development of presentations, breakout facilitation guides, and discussion notes across the seven strategic pillars.
The day concluded with confirmation of logistics, breakout group assignments, and facilitator roles, setting the stage for tomorrow's multistakeholder validation sessions.
Together, we continue building a coordinated, innovative, and sustainable bioeconomy that will drive Kenya's economic transformation.

🌍✨ Pwani University Embraces Digital Innovation for Education Excellence ✨🌍

Pwani University Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Kahindi, officially received the Goocus Edge Computing Equipment from the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Rose Ruto Korir, and her team trained at AICAD, JKUAT University, as Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) for the project implementation.

The Goocus Edge Computing equipment enables learners to access educational materials without internet connectivity, creating inclusive opportunities for mobile-based learning. This cutting-edge technology, developed by Castalia International, was made possible through the generous support of the Government of Japan, in partnership with UNESCO–Kenya, the Ministry of Education (Kenya), and UNESCO-IICBA.

📚 The project, “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative”, will:

Enhance mobile-based learning and digital inclusion

Empower female teachers and school leaders with knowledge, skills, and confidence

Strengthen Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Advance regional collaboration and the Sustainable Development Goals through digital education

📍 Day One: The National Bioeconomy Strategy Meeting

The technical team convened today at Pwani University for an intensive preparatory retreat to advance the development of Kenya's National Bioeconomy Strategy.

The day began with a welcome session and an overview of the retreat objectives, followed by discussions on the strategy's alignment with **Kenya Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), STISA-2034, and the East African Community Regional Bioeconomy Strategy**.

Participants reviewed the situational analysis to identify key gaps and emerging opportunities before engaging in focused working sessions to strengthen the seven strategic pillars of the National Bioeconomy Strategy. The sessions covered governance, sustainable resource management and circular bioeconomy, research and innovation, bio-based industrial development, investment and markets, human capital, inclusion, awareness, and regional partnerships.

The day concluded with a plenary session to harmonize inputs into a consolidated draft, laying a strong foundation for the next phase of strategy development.

Together, we are shaping a sustainable, innovative, and inclusive bioeconomy for Kenya's future.
