Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Soldamatic Welding Simulator, marking a significant milestone in enhancing practical training, strengthening technical skills and preparing cadets for the demands of the maritime industry.

The simulator uses Augmented Reality (AR) technology to create a realistic welding environment, allowing trainees to practise welding techniques using specialised tools without actual metal, welding gas or other consumables. It provides a safe, controlled and interactive learning environment where cadets develop essential skills before handling actual welding equipment.

Speaking during the commissioning, BMA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Eric Katana, said the simulator will give cadets valuable practical experience and build their confidence in applying welding techniques.

“The commissioning of the Soldamatic Welding Simulator marks an important step in strengthening practical training at Bandari Maritime Academy. It allows our cadets to practise welding techniques, understand the correct procedures and build confidence before undertaking actual welding tasks,’’ said Dr. Katana.

He added that the Academy has continued to invest in modern training technologies to enhance the quality of training and align its programmes with relevant international maritime standards.

“We remain committed to investing in technology that enhances the quality of training and equips our cadets with the skills required in the maritime industry. By embracing modern training solutions, we prepare our graduates for emerging opportunities locally and internationally,” he said.

The simulator combines Augmented Reality, physical welding tools and specialised software to create a virtual welding environment. Trainees use adapted welding torches and an AR helmet that displays a simulated welding arc and molten weld pool.

The system monitors key parameters, including torch angle, travel speed and distance from the workpiece, and provides real-time feedback to help trainees correct mistakes. It also generates performance scores and reports, enabling instructors to assess progress and provide targeted guidance.

The simulator allows cadets to practise welding techniques repeatedly without consuming metal, gas or other welding materials. It reduces training costs and exposure to welding hazards while improving hand-eye coordination, accuracy and confidence.

Present were BMA Acting Deputy Director of Maritime Training Major (Rtd.) Franklyne Toniok, Deputy Director, Finance & Accounts; CPA Justin Ombui, Deputy Director, Supply Chain Management; and Mr. Samson Chira Murigi
