The University of Nairobi Journal of Language and Linguistics successfully met Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) rigorous best-practice requirements for inclusion in the internationally recognized directory of quality, peer-reviewed open-access journals. This achievement marks an important step in the UoN's effort to strengthen the quality, impact, visibility, accessibility and global discoverability of its scholarly publications. Inclusion in DOAJ enhances the journal’s international presence and makes its scholarly content more discoverable to researchers, academics, students and other global users.

The University of Nairobi has hosted the Flagging-Off Ceremony for the 2026 Confucius Institute Scholarship Students and the second cohort of the 2+2 Joint Programme for International Chinese Language Education Scholarship Students in Kenya.

The ceremony marked an important milestone for the students as they prepare to embark on an enriching academic journey that will provide them with opportunities to deepen their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture, broaden their international perspectives, and experience learning within a global environment.

The scholarship programmes reflect the growing opportunities for academic exchange and collaboration between Kenya and China, while strengthening people-to-people connections and fostering greater understanding between the two countries.

As the students begin this new chapter, the University of Nairobi celebrates their achievement and wishes them every success as they pursue their studies and represent Kenya on the international stage.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, the University of Nairobi’s Institute for Development Studies-University of Nairobi , in partnership with Africa, hosted a public debate examining Kenya’s economic growth trajectory and identifying practical policy solutions to accelerate industrial transformation. Convened under the theme “Debating Evidence on Growth: A Postgraduate Seminar on Kenya’s Economic Potential and Future,” the forum brought together faculty, postgraduate researchers, and economic experts to discuss how Kenya can move away from low-margin commodity exports, resolve structural value-chain constraints, and strategically integrate into the global economy.

Prof. Karuti Kanyinga, Research Professor of Development Studies at IDS, challenged the academic and industrial community to overcome anxieties surrounding technological disruption and actively deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to scale productivity. He noted that international markets are enforcing strict environmental sustainability, green energy, and hourly efficiency benchmarks, making adoption of emerging tools essential for competitiveness.

Prof. Ayub Gitau, the UoN Vice-Chancellor, highlighted some 6 priorities that touch on students' welfare and advancement during his address on Thursday, 27th August, 2026 . He underscored, 'I set six priorities to drive that agenda:
1) The first is student success, welfare and wellbeing,
2) The second is research, innovation, entrepreneurship and curriculum reforms,
3) The third is digital transformation,
4) The fourth is infrastructure development,
5) The fifth is staff empowerment,
6) And finally the sixth: stronger partnerships with industry, our alumni and the global partners.
