🎓 CUEA Opens 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) officially opened the 2026/2027 academic year on Thursday, 3rd September 2026, with a Convocation Mass and Ceremony centred on truth, integrity, faith and courageous leadership.

Presiding over the Mass, Rt. Rev. Wallace Ng’ang’a, Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Kenya, challenged the CUEA community to embrace the guidance of the Holy Spirit and pursue excellence with character and conscience.

The Mass also saw 10 candidates receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

In his first Convocation address, the new Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Very Rev. Prof. Elias Omondi Opongo, SJ, called on students to move beyond asking “Who will employ me?” and instead ask:

“What problem can I solve? What value can I create? What can I innovate and whom can I empower?”

He outlined key priorities including broader application of Artificial Intelligence (with development of a CUEA App), research and innovation, entrepreneurship, new academic programmes and stronger communication, including the upcoming Zikomo CUEA weekly bulletin.

The Vice-Chancellor’s leadership will be guided by six pillars: shared purpose, academic growth, Catholic identity, responsible stewardship, research and innovation, and courageous leadership for change.

🎓 CUEA Welcomes New Students as Orientation Begins

As the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) welcomes a new Vice-Chancellor, the University has today opened its doors to a new cohort of students during an orientation programme held at both Langata Campus and Gaba Campus.

The University’s new Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof. Elias Omondi Opongo, SJ, together with his leadership team, were on hand to welcome the thousands of new students and their parents and guardians as they began their journey into higher education.

Addressing parents and guardians, the Vice-Chancellor called for close collaboration between families and the University, emphasising that the formation of young people is a shared responsibility.

“We will do our part; kindly do your part.”

Speaking to the new students, Rev. Prof. Opongo encouraged them to embrace the See, Judge, Act approach in making decisions and navigating their experiences at the University. He further challenged them to make their Catholic identity visible in the way they relate with others, both within and beyond the University community.

The Vice-Chancellor also encouraged students to make the most of university life by actively participating in clubs and societies, music, innovation activities, community service and student leadership.

He noted that engaging in multiple constructive activities alongside academic work contributes to the development of students’ mental capacity, confidence, creativity and leadership skills.

As the new students settle into campus life, orientation activities will continue throughout the week at various levels, providing them with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the University, its programmes, values, services and community.

🎓 CUEA Welcomes New Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof. Elias Omondi Opongo, SJ

A new chapter has begun at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) with the assumption of office of Rev. Prof. Elias Omondi Opongo, SJ, as the University’s new Rector and Vice-Chancellor, effective Tuesday, 1st September 2026.

His appointment follows the conclusion of the tenure of the immediate former Vice-Chancellor, Very Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua Ngari, whose term ended on 31st August 2026 following an elaborate and orderly handover process.

The transition ceremony, preceded by Holy Mass, brought together members of the University community and key stakeholders to mark the leadership transition.

In his remarks, the Chair of the University Council, Rt. Rev. Mark Kadima, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma, challenged the incoming Vice-Chancellor to embrace the call of the day’s Scripture readings by remaining available, reliable and to persevere, particularly during challenging moments.

Drawing from Luke 4:18–19, which echoes the prophetic words of Isaiah (Is. 61:1-2), Bishop Kadima reminded the new Vice-Chancellor of Christ’s mission:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”

He also called upon CUEA staff and the wider University community to give maximum support and cooperation to the incoming Vice-Chancellor as he takes up the responsibility of leading the institution.

Most Rev. Philip Anyolo, Archbishop of Nairobi and Pro-Chancellor of CUEA, witnessed the occasion and commended all parties for ensuring a very orderly transition. He expressed appreciation to the outgoing Vice-Chancellor for his leadership, particularly in steering the University through a period of successful recovery.

Also present were Rev. Andrew Kaufa, the new AMECEA Secretary General and member of the CUEA Council; Deputy Vice-Chancellors; University Executive Directors; the Legal Officer; and other members of the University leadership.

As CUEA welcomes its new Rector and Vice-Chancellor, the University community looks forward to a new season of faith-filled leadership, academic excellence, innovation, service and renewed institutional growth.

🌿 CUEA Hosts Franciscan Family Symposium Marking 800 Years of St. Francis of Assisi

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) hosted the Franciscan Family in Kenya Symposium from Wednesday, 26th to Friday, 28th August 2026, as members of the Franciscan family gathered to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the life and legacy of their founder, St. Francis of Assisi.

The three-day symposium was officially opened by Most Rev. Maurice Muhatia Makumba, Archbishop of Kisumu Catholic Archdiocese and Chair of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB).

In his opening remarks, Archbishop Muhatia challenged members of the wider Franciscan family to remain faithful witnesses to the charism of St. Francis, particularly his commitment to solidarity with the poor and vulnerable.

The opening ceremony also featured the launch of the book Francis of History and His Influence on the World, by Fr. Arnold Shirima, Franciscan Capuchin Superior and Chair of the Franciscan Family Association.

The symposium concluded on Friday afternoon with Rt. Rev. Obed Karobia, OFM Conv., Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi, accompanied by Msgr. Luciano Labanca, Chargé d’Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature gracing the closing ceremony.

🌱 In keeping with the Franciscan commitment to care for creation, the gathering also featured tree planting, inspired by the spirit of Laudato Si’, the encyclical of the late Pope Francis calling for greater care and responsibility for our common home.

The symposium provided an important platform for reflection on the enduring relevance of the Franciscan charism and its call to faith, solidarity, service to the poor and care for creation.

CUEA Hosts 3rd CaPSHA–K Conference

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is hosting the 3rd Edition of the Catholic Primary Schools Heads’ Association – Kenya (CaPSHA–K) Conference, from Tuesday, 18th to Thursday, 20th August 2026.

At the opening ceremony, the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Student Affairs, representing the Vice-Chancellor, warmly welcomed the headteachers to CUEA and encouraged them to consider advancing their academic and professional studies at the University.

The keynote address and official opening of the conference were delivered by Rt. Rev. Mark Kadima, Chairman of the Commission for Education and Religious Education and Bishop of Bungoma. He challenged Catholic school leaders and teachers to rise in faith and recognise the greater value and potential of the pupils entrusted to their care, reminding them of their important role in shaping the future.

The conference is being held under the theme:

“Catholic Schools: Rooted in Faith, Rising with Purpose”

Inspired by Jeremiah 29:11: “I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for.”

The conference brings together Catholic primary school heads for reflection, professional growth, sharing of experiences and renewed commitment to nurturing learners grounded in faith, purpose and excellence.

CUEA Launches Institutional Scientific and Ethics Review Committee

The University has launched its Institutional Scientific and Ethics Review Committee (CUEA-ISERC), marking a significant milestone in the University's efforts to strengthen ethical standards and integrity in research.

The committee was officially launched on Thursday, August 6, 2026, during the University's Thursday Community Mass. Its establishment follows the accreditation of CUEA-ISERC by the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI).

Speaking during the launch, CUEA's Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Advancement and Partnerships, Prof. Damian Maingi, described the accreditation as a testament to the University's commitment to promoting responsible, credible, and impactful research.

"We gather not only to celebrate an institutional achievement but also to reaffirm our University's unwavering commitment to research excellence, ethical integrity, academic quality, and service to humanity," Prof. Maingi said.

He urged members of the newly inaugurated committee to discharge their responsibilities with wisdom, integrity, fairness, professionalism, and accountability. He further called on them to ensure that research protocols, proposals, and decisions reviewed by the committee meet the highest scientific and ethical standards while remaining anchored in the University's Christian values, mission, and vision.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Justus Munyoki, emphasized that credible research must be grounded in ethical practice. He described the establishment of the Ethics Review Committee as a timely achievement that will contribute to raising the profile and quality of research at the University.

Following their inauguration, members of CUEA-ISERC received a solemn blessing from the Mass Celebrant, Rev. Fr. Mark Busima, marking the formal beginning of their mandate.

Research is one of the three core pillars of CUEA, alongside teaching and community service. The establishment of the institutional ethics review mechanism strengthens the University's capacity to ensure that research undertaken within the institution meets recognized scientific and ethical standards while contributing meaningfully to society.

The launch further underscores CUEA's commitment to advancing research and innovation that responds to contemporary challenges while upholding the principles of academic integrity, human dignity, and responsible scholarship.
