WHY FEEDLOT IN KENYA
As a response to frequent droughts coupled with shrinking grazing land as a result of land subdivision and user changes, Feedlot farming has become the only sustainable and profitable alternative to traditional pastoralism.

Feedlot design and construction.

Inorder to ensure the right flow in a feedlot facility, the design should put to consideration that:
1. Once gge animals enter the feedlot facility, they should not get out, however, they should be able to navigate from one paddock to the other.
2. Animals fresh from the market should not mix or share feed or water with existing stock.
3. Sick animals should not be in contact with the rest of the stock
4. There should be limited interaction between the feedloted livestock and the care takers.
5. Traffic tobthe feedlot facility must be highly controlled to minimize disease transmission.
Thus, a good feedlot design should incorporate all necessary facilities.

FEEDLOT BEEF HIGHLIGHTS

GOOD CONDITION BUT BELOW SLAUGHTER WEIGHT

Cattle feedlot farming is the kind of beef cattle production where the farmer gets cattle that have attained slaughter size but are not in good body condition for slaughter.

Animals may also be admitted to a feedlot if they are in good body condition but below the slaughter weight.

The feedlot farmer feeds the animals with specially formulated fattening and finishing diet for 30 to 120 days. Over that period, the animals attain the commonly desired slaughter weight of 400kg and are delivered to the market.

Such cattle are in high demand. They fetch good prices and business profit of about 20 per cent for the farmer. The problem is that they are not readily available on the Kenyan market.
