Eng. Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau is the new VC

The University of Nairobi Council, following consultations in a special sitting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, has announced key leadership appointments ushering in a new era for the institution.
Prof. Ayub N. Gitau has been appointed the 9th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
Prof. Josiah Omollo Aduda has been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor Finance, Planning & Development
The Council has also appreciated Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson for her dedicated service as Acting Vice-Chancellor during the transition period. Both appointments take effect from May 14, 2026.

The University of Nairobi is convening regional and international partners for the APHREA-DST Workshop themed “Promoting Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Health” in Nairobi.

The workshop forms part of the Advancing Public Health Research in Eastern Africa through Data Science Training (APHREA-DST) DS-I Africa initiative ; a collaboration between the University of Nairobi, Addis Ababa University and Columbia University supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The engagement brings together experts in public health, data science, artificial intelligence, epidemiology, health informatics, and research policy to strengthen data-driven approaches to healthcare and research capacity in Africa.

Speaking during the opening session, DVC RIE (Research, Innovation & Enterprise) Prof. Leonidah Kerubo noted that the initiative aligns with the University’s strategic priorities of strengthening digitization, advancing research excellence, fostering innovation, and deepening international collaboration.

Since its establishment, APHREA-DST has contributed to the development of MSc programmes in Public Health Data Science, faculty development, applied AI and machine learning research, and regional scientific collaboration.

The workshop reflects the University of Nairobi’s commitment to advancing research excellence, innovation, digitization, and impactful global partnerships that address real-world public health challenges.

The University of Nairobi is hosting a 5-day intensive short course on Climate Risk Assessment for Infrastructure aimed at strengthening climate-resilient planning and infrastructure design.

Participants will gain:
• Hands-on GIS training for climate risk mapping
• Tools to integrate climate risk into infrastructure feasibility studies
• Practical experience producing risk maps and project summary reports

📅 Date: 9–13 March 2026
📍 Mode: Physical delivery

The course is ideal for engineers, urban planners, GIS analysts, and climate resilience professionals.

University of Nairobi Advocates for Inclusive Green Skills Education

The University of Nairobi (UoN) played a leading role at the recent United Nations Environment Assembly side event, "The Green Skills Blueprint: Powering the Green Transition Through Education."

Organized by the Children and Youth Major Group to UNEP (CYMG), in collaboration with UoN and Tsinghua University, the event focused on how education can be the critical engine for a sustainable future.

Inclusivity: Dr. James Kaoga of the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation emphasized that while we focus on high-level, technical green jobs, we must shift our resources to train for the low-level and low-skill jobs where the masses are engaged. UoN is leading this charge, actively re-skilling youth in critical areas like solarization and carbon credit issues to ensure they have economically relevant skills and contribute directly to climate adaptation in the Global South.

The Global Challenge: The discussion highlighted two major barriers that must be fixed:

Mainstreaming Education: Climate and sustainability topics must be integrated across all educational programmes, not just limited to short, single modules.

Financial Barriers: The high cost of Master’s qualifications and the lack of paid, entry-level experience is making this crucial education inaccessible to many talented individuals, hindering the global effort.

UoN is committed to being part of the solution by extending our capacity-building efforts to technical and vocational institutions, ensuring that our collective fight against climate change is broad, inclusive, and impactful.

Driving Innovation: UoN Hosts Engineering and Science Complex & FST Research Conferences

As part of the 2025 Annual Research and Innovation Week, the University of Nairobi hosted two KEY events: the Engineering and Science Complex (ESC) Research Annual Conference and the 8th Annual Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) Research and Innovation Week.

The ESC conference, held on October 21–22, 2025, brought together academia, industry, and international partners under the theme “Engineering a New Era: Pioneering Science and Technology for Societal Change.”
Keynotes presentations explored global research linkages, while UoN scholars and French collaborators shared impact stories from joint research grants and PhD mobility programs.

Running concurrently, the FST Conference (October 22–24) at Chiromo Campus themed “Advancing Frontiers: Integrating Science, Technology, and Innovation to Transform Society for a Sustainable Future” features a dynamic program of plenary sessions, student research presentations, and exhibitions.

Speaking during the opening, Prof. Sheila Okoth, Associate Dean, urged scholars to leverage partnerships to drive innovation. Prof. Leonida Kerubo-, Dean of FST, emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration across the Faculty’s research institutes, while Prof. John Maina-Wagacha –IPMO Director lauded the Faculty’s outstanding contributions to Research and Innovation Week

Together, the ESC and FST conferences showcase UoN’s commitment to knowledge creation, sustainability, and societal transformation through science, technology, and innovation.

The Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA), University of Nairobi, is hosting the AFAS Phase 1 Dissemination Workshop at Mövenpick Hotel, Nairobi.
Theme: "Scaling Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Resilient Savannas: Integrating Indigenous and Local Knowledge, Research, and Policy"
This one-day workshop brings together key stakeholders from research, policy, civil society, the private sector, and local communities to bridge the gap between science, Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK), policy, and practical implementation.
Key Focus:

Assessing progress and gaps in NbS research
Co-creating a forward-looking research agenda for AFAS Phase 2
