Boosting Education in Wajir

In the spirit of national unity and progress, the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) joined Wajir County in the build-up to this yearโ€™s Madaraka Day celebrations.

Guided by its mandate to strengthen teacher professional development and promote inclusive STEM education, CEMASTEA showcased its commitment to empowering schools with innovative teaching practices and nurturing the next generation of problem-solvers.

CEMASTEA not only amplified visibility of STEM education reforms but also reinforced the message that sustainable development begins in classrooms across all counties. This contribution in Wajir stands as a testament to the institutionโ€™s dedication to building capacity, inspiring learners and strengthening Kenyaโ€™s future through STEM education.

We are delighted to present the 23rd Edition of the CEMASTEA Info Newsletter (January - April 2026), a vibrant reflection of our shared journey in advancing STEM education through innovation, collaboration and impact. This issue captures the transformative power of partnerships - stories of teachers empowered to lead, learners equipped with future-ready skills and schools reimagined as hubs of creativity and discovery.

From the deployment of Starlink Internet devices to bridge the digital divide, to the African Olympiad Academy Boot Camp preparing students for continental competitions and the VVOB - supported training embedding gender - responsive pedagogy into classrooms, each article demonstrates how collective action is shaping Kenyaโ€™s educational landscape.

We also honour leadership legacies, celebrating the retirement of Mrs. Jacinta Akatsa, whose vision expanded teacher training to over 65,000 educators and championed outreach programs such as STEM on Wheels. Her footprints remind us that bold leadership inspires generations.

This edition is more than a record of milestones - it is a call to action. It invites educators, partners and communities to continue championing STEM pathways, nurturing learnersโ€™ confidence and building resilient systems that prepare Kenya and Africa for the future.

Happy reading and may you be inspired to carry forward the spirit of impact through partnerships.

The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) is stepping up efforts aimed at enhancing the performance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) -related subjects in Junior Schools (JS) in Taita Taveta County. The mentorship programme aims to equip JS learners and teachers with practical skills and knowledge for STEM education, under the Competency-Based Education (CBE).

The mentorship and outreach programme targets grade 8 and 9 learners in Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and pre-technical studies and seeks to enhance their capacity in learning. The programme further seeks to motivate and inspire students to pursue STEM subjects as a way of upscaling the uptake of the subjects in Senior school, as part of the governmentโ€™s initiative towards Vision 2030. Such initiatives are intended to support the 60 per cent transition of learners to the STEM pathway in senior school.

Speaking at Mwanyambo Junior School in Voi, CEMASTEA programme coordinator Joseph Kuria said the initiative is designed to inspire and equip junior school learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in STEM subjects. Mr. Kuria says the use of models and play-based learning removes the stereotypes that sciences are meant for specially gifted learners.
โ€œWhen we spur them into STEM, as a nation, we gear towards the 4th industrial revolution. When they interact with laboratory apparatus and perform the experiments, even girls know that STEM education is not for boys and any student can excel in STEM,โ€ he notes.

CEMASTEA hopes this will cultivate a generation of innovative learners poised to lead technological advancements in the country.
During the five-day mentorship and outreach programme, CEMASTEA trainers are engaging teachers and students from several schools within four sub-counties of Taita Taveta County. The schools include: Mwanyambo, Mengo, Mlilo Junior Schools, in interactive STEM activities.

"This programme also showcases teachers' innovative activities that can enhance the teaching of STEM-related areas,โ€ Kuria said.
Kuria said CEMASTEA has developed innovative teaching and learning materials to promote the uptake of STEM education.
"The activities emphasize hands-on activities, allowing learners to interact with materials so they can become creative by themselves. We are saying, don't tell learners, let learners do," he said. The program also mentors teachers on how to use locally available materials to teach STEM subjects.

"We showcase activities in mathematics and activities that foster creativity in integrated science and ICT. Learners are benefiting from sessions on climate education to be able to innovate solutions for their communities as a way of building resilience against Climate change.

A pre-technical studies teacher at Mwanyambo Junior School Christine Mwatati affirms the STEM mentorship programme has ignited curiosity and interest in STEM amongst her students.
Mwatati says the initiative holds great promise in encouraging more learners to embrace the sciences and pursue STEM related courses at institutions of higher learning.

She observes that models used at the CEMASTEA exhibition have simplified concepts in STEM and helped in transforming the perception of learners towards STEM.

โ€œThe program will boost education outcomes among her students ,โ€ she observes.

Mwatati notes that the adoption of the theory-to-practice approach is necessary in making the teaching of sciences interactive and ensuring retention of knowledge among learners.
Wendy Kalega and Renold Manganga, students at Mwanyambu Junior school say that through the mentorship programme, they have been able to learn complex concepts in Biology,Chemistry and Physics.

The students say exposure to the program has changed their attitude and misconception about the subjects and are looking forward to pursuing the STEM pathway in senior school.

CEMASTEA participates in Elimu Mashinani, Nakuru County Edition

The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), mandated to develop capacity in STEM education, training and research in its collaborative effort joined Amb. (Prof.) Julius K. Bitok, Principal Secretary, State Department for Basic Education at Nakuru High School for the latest edition of Elimu Mashinani on 5th May 2026.

The interactive programme brought together educators, learners, parents and policymakers for in-depth conversations on strengthening Kenyaโ€™s education sector. Elimu Mashinani is designed to bridge the gap between national education policies and grassroots realities by engaging stakeholders directly in counties with an objective to foster inclusivity, transparency and collaboration in shaping the future of education, ensuring that reforms are not only well understood but also effectively implemented at the community level.

CEMASTEAโ€™s participation underscores its mission to continuously develop capacity in STEM education for sustainable development through training, research, innovation and partnerships with related ecosystems. By aligning with Elimu Mashinani, CEMASTEA ensures that STEM education remains central to Kenyaโ€™s education agenda.

Through its training programmes, CEMASTEA supports teachers in adopting innovative pedagogies, while its research initiatives provide evidence-based insights to guide policy and practice.
