𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨
Today, KISE is partnering with Safaricom M-PESA Foundation and the County Government of Lamu in an ongoing medical camp at Witu Mjini Secondary School.

The camp is bringing essential health services closer to the community, giving families an opportunity to get checked, seek advice and access care without travelling far.

From medical consultations and maternal health services to eye and dental care, hearing and vision assessments, laboratory tests, ultrasound, ECG and cancer screening, the focus is simple making sure people can access the care they need, closer to home.

Because when healthcare comes closer to the community, lives are touched and communities are strengthened.

𝗟𝗔𝗠𝗨 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 : 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗙 𝗔𝗡 𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗘
Sometimes, the most profound moments of care happen far away from the assessment table.
They happen in the quiet spaces between a question and an answer. In a child’s hesitant gaze. In a hand reaching out for reassurance. In an embrace that says, without a single word, you are safe here.

At the KISE Mashinani Outreach in Lamu County, a speech therapist holds a young child close. The child’s arms wrap around her, and for a brief moment, the assessments, forms, clinical procedures and technical conversations fade into the background.

There is only connection.
And in that embrace is a story no assessment form could ever fully capture.

It is the story of a child who deserves to be seen beyond a diagnosis. A child who deserves patience when words are difficult, understanding when communication takes a different form, and kindness when the world can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Because sometimes, before a child can find their voice, they first need to know that someone is willing to listen.

At KISE, we believe that our work goes beyond assessments and therapy. We meet children where they are, with expertise, yes, but also with compassion. Because care is not always delivered through a procedure. Sometimes it comes through a reassuring touch. A patient listener. A gentle smile. A warm embrace.

A quiet message that says:
You are seen.
You are valued.
You belong.

This is the heart of KISE Mashinani.
It is not simply about taking services closer to communities. It is about taking dignity, compassion and hope with us.

Because behind every assessment is a child with dreams.Behind every family is a story.
And behind every service we provide is a human being waiting to be understood.

Sometimes, connection comes before communication.And sometimes, an embrace becomes the first language a child understands.

𝗞𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺, 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) was home to an AfriYouth Care Group youth engagement forum, bringing together young people to explore climate action, inclusive leadership, policy engagement and innovative solutions to challenges affecting their communities.

The forum was graced by H.E. Dr. Joyce Kindiki, Second Lady of the Republic of Kenya, who challenged young people to transform their curiosity and knowledge into meaningful solutions and advocacy, noting that climate change is already affecting communities through changing weather patterns, water insecurity and environmental degradation.

In his welcoming remarks, KISE Director Dr. Norman Kiogora appreciated AfriYouth Care Group and the National Research Fund for being part of KISE’s journey. He highlighted the importance of research in addressing emerging challenges, including the rising cases of autism in Kenya and globally, and emphasised the role of young people in shaping solutions for future generations.

Gorffly Mokua, Founder & CEO of AfriYouth Care Group, urged young people to understand policy architecture from international frameworks to local structures and actively participate in decisions that shape their future, emphasising: “You are never too young to make a difference!”

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), in partnership with the Agency for Disability Development for Africa, is advancing a Competency-Based Teacher Professional Development Programme in Inclusive Education.

The programme is designed to strengthen teachers’ knowledge, skills and competencies to effectively support diverse learners and promote inclusive learning environments.

Through continuous professional development, teachers are better equipped to identify and respond to individual learning needs, adapt teaching approaches and foster classrooms where every learner can participate, learn and thrive.

Building teacher capacity. Strengthening inclusive education. Leaving no learner behind.

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.

Day Two of the KISE Mashinani Outreach is underway at the Vocational Training Centre, Lamu, where individuals, families and communities are accessing essential disability assessment, rehabilitation and support services closer to home.

From functional and educational assessments to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vision and hearing assessments, NCPWD registration and school placement, the outreach is connecting people with services that can make a meaningful difference in their education, rehabilitation and participation in community life.

For many families, access to the right assessment or support can be the first step towards unlocking opportunities for a child or person with a disability.

That is the purpose of KISE Mashinani — taking expertise and essential services beyond the institution and into communities where they are needed most.

Closer services. Greater access. More opportunities. One community at a time.

𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗙 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗗𝗔𝗬 | 𝗞𝗜𝗦𝗘

Today KISE hosted the Deaf Awareness Commemoration Day, the flagship event of the national Deaf Awareness Week running from 21–27 September 2026.

IEBC Commissioner Anne Nderitu officiated the event, with IEBC also supporting participant registration, reinforcing the focus on accessible civic participation.

Welcoming stakeholders, KISE Director Dr Norman Kiogora highlighted government commitment to disability rights and described the Persons with Disabilities Act as a key legal foundation for advancing inclusion.

The programme featured tree planting and remarks from NCPWD, the Ministry of Education, National Police Service and Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. Hon. Dr Isaac Mwaura, Head of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Rights, reaffirmed the office’s openness to stakeholders and highlighted government frameworks supporting Deaf rights, including progress on the Kenya Sign Language (KSL) Bill.

The day also explored the history and challenges of the Deaf community, caregiver experiences and success stories from four Deaf trailblazers.

A panel bringing together IEBC, KISE, National Police Service, Ministry of Health and National Association of the Deaf (NAD), with support from Safaricom and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), examined practical strategies for inclusion.

Under the theme, “Declaration of Deaf Rights as Human Rights,” the commemoration reinforced the importance of accessibility, healthcare, legal rights and civic participation in building an inclusive Kenya.
