KISE continues to take its services closer to communities through the Laikipia Medical Camp, held in partnership with Safaricom Foundation, Zuri Health and Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital, alongside other partners.

The camp provided communities with access to a range of essential services, including general and specialist consultations, eye care, disability assessment, dental and cancer screening, laboratory services, therapy, and free medication, bringing quality healthcare and specialized support closer to those who need it most.

The Laikipia County Minister for Health, Dr. Albert Waigura Taiti, visited the camp in support of the ongoing outreach, reaffirming the importance of partnerships in expanding access to healthcare and inclusive services.

When organizations hold hands, communities heal, lives are transformed, and no one is left behind. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

Members of the Ugandan Parliamentโ€™s Education and Sports Committee, who have been in Kenya for a week benchmarking on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) recently introduced in Uganda, today engaged with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) to learn more about special needs education and teacher training.

Welcoming the delegation, KISE Director Dr Norman Kiogora thanked the MPs for making a deliberate effort to learn from Kenyaโ€™s experience and for recognising the importance of inclusion in education. He emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between the two countries and proposed a joint assessment initiative in Uganda to support the identification and response to learnersโ€™ diverse educational needs.

Deputy Director Programmes, Dr Lynett Ongโ€™era, took the delegates through KISEโ€™s mandate, highlighting the Instituteโ€™s role in supporting special needs education, teacher training, assessment and the promotion of inclusive education.

The benchmarking visit provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange and reflection on how Kenya and Uganda can strengthen inclusive education and ensure that no learner is left behind. ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

How prepared are universities to support students with hearing impairment pursuing STEM programmes?

This is at the heart of a forum bringing together university lecturers, students with hearing impairment, Ministry of Education officials and other stakeholders to explore practical ways of strengthening inclusion in STEM education.

Discussions are focusing on lecturer preparedness, institutional policies, accessible learning environments, assistive technology and support systems that can help remove barriers and create better learning experiences for students with hearing impairment.

The forum provides an opportunity for students to share their experiences while educators and policymakers reflect on what needs to change to make STEM education more inclusive and accessible.

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) hosted the Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya for a courtesy visit focused on strengthening collaboration and advancing opportunities for persons with disabilities across Kenya.

The discussions highlighted the ongoing partnership in supporting the Diploma in Special Needs Education (SNE), including sponsorship of 30 teachers currently pursuing their second year of training at Iregi TTC, as part of efforts to strengthen the capacity of teachers and specialists serving learners with disabilities.

Director, Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya, Madam Sarah Bae, reaffirmed the Foundationโ€™s commitment to supporting Special Needs Education through KOICA, the Korean Governmentโ€™s development cooperation agency. She noted that the partnership will explore opportunities to sponsor more teachers and SNE specialists, as well as jointly develop funding proposals to support assessment and therapy services, training, and the distribution of assistive devices.

KISE, through Dr. Lynett Ongera, reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners whose programmes advance inclusion and improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities. She highlighted KISEโ€™s ongoing work in the distribution of assistive devices and learning materials to schools across the country, noting that the Institute remains committed to expanding this support so that more learners with disabilities can access the devices and resources they need to learn and thrive.

The visit reinforces the importance of strong partnerships in building a more inclusive society where every learner with a disability has an opportunity to participate, learn and reach their full potential.
