The Goethe-Institut Nairobi in partnership with Qwani and Kenyan Readathon, are pleased to invite you to our first ever joint event which is a new series that we are introducing to promote Kenyan literature.

The event is an open, head-to head discussion on Kenyan literature. It is a session that intends to highlight the depths of Kenyan literature by involving a panel of three readers and a moderator.

What makes a great book?
Is it the unforgettable characters, a gripping plot, beautiful language, powerful themes, or the emotions it leaves behind?

In this exciting head-to-head session, three panelists will champion a book that they have read and attempt to convince the audience that is the best choice among the books presented. Each panelist will have the opportunity to make a compelling case for their selected title, highlighting its strengths, impact, and relevance. The panelists will go beyond simple summaries, using persuasive reflections, memorable excerpts, and character analysis to win over the audience.

The closing event of Indigo Hypoixia last week continued the performative gesture initiated at the vernissage. The painting that began on the opening night reached its final stage—and its end—during this event. In a deliberate act, the artist, Sannad Shreef, destroyed the work in front of the audience.

This moment of rupture and release reflects the emotional core of the practice, engaging with themes of inner turmoil, impermanence, and transformation. The act did not conclude the work in a traditional sense, but rather completed its lifecycle.

In collaboration with Goethe-Institut Sudan, the Networks of Belonging project responds to the civil war in Sudan by fostering local artistic networks, professional exchange, and sustainable structures of inclusion. As part of the joint venture, each of the selected artists based in East African countries is granted a production budget to develop new artworks and include them in the exhibition.

The Network of Belonging exhibitions are scheduled to take place between July and November 2026.

It's literature o'clock this Saturday! This month we will have Catherine Nyambura as the guest for our AMKA Literature Forum. She will be in conversation with our forum guests on the art of public speaking and communication for young upcoming writers. She will give practical insights on how writers can use available channels to talk about their works and speak confidently.

Whether launching a book, moderating a panel, giving interviews, reading their work aloud or speaking at literary festivals, this session with the professional toastmaster will equip writers with practical skills to communicate effectively and leave a lasting impression.

Catherine Nyambura is a charter member of Diplospeak Toastmasters Club.
Professionally, Catherine is a Librarian (Cataloger) with the Library of Congress where she has worked for 26 years. Her job entails creating records which describe resources so that a library user can successfully identify and access the information they need.

Join us for the closing performance tomorrow!
Indigo Hypoxia by Sudanese artist, Sannad Shreef, is conceived as an immersive solo exhibition—a space that brings together painting, textile installation, and live performance. It presents a series of presences: alienated blue figures existing within a purple atmosphere.

The exhibition explores an internal psychological state shaped by a sense of spatial and emotional void.

Closing performance, 23rd July, 6pm.
