Kenya is among the countries participating in the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference currently taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.

The conference has brought together governments, employers and workers from across the globe to discuss important issues affecting the world of work, including digital jobs, Artificial Intelligence, gender equality, worker protection and skills development.

The Kenyan delegation is led by Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Hon. Dr. Alfred Mutua and includes representatives from government, employers' organizations, workers' unions and key labour institutions, among them NITA Director General Dr. Rukia Atikiya

The discussions are particularly important for Kenya as the country continues to embrace technology, create jobs and equip workers with skills needed for emerging industries.

For NITA, the conference provides an opportunity to engage with global best practices and explore innovative approaches to industrial training, lifelong learning and workforce development.

By participating in these conversations, Kenya is helping shape a future of work that is inclusive, productive and responsive to the needs of workers and employers alike.

NITA, Industry Partners Validate Curricula to Enhance Market Responsiveness

On Tuesday, the National Industrial Training Authority convened a stakeholders’ forum at the NITA Athi River Conference Facility to validate three curricula and ensure they are responsive to the current needs of the labour market and industry.

The curricula under validation are:

Fodder Production Technician

Front Office Operator

Tour Guide Operator

The forum, sponsored by the International Labour Organization through the Public Private Development Partnerships (PPDP) Programme, brought together key industry stakeholders, including the Kenya Association of Tour Operators and representatives from the county governments of Kajiado County, Nakuru County, and Narok County, among others.

The stakeholders provided insights on emerging trends, technologies, and competencies currently shaping the sectors. Their recommendations will be incorporated into the curricula to ensure the training programmes remain aligned with evolving industry demands and labour market needs.

The Authority continues to work closely with industry players through Sector Training Committees to develop and review curricula that equip trainees with practical, relevant, and employable skills that respond to the needs of the market and support national development priorities.

NITA Calls for Integration of EV Curriculum into Learning Institutions to Prepare Trainees for the Rapidly Evolving Transport Sector

The National Industrial Training Authority - NITA has called for the integration of Electric Vehicle (EV) curriculum into learning institutions to equip trainees with skills needed for the rapidly evolving transport sector and support Kenya’s transition towards sustainable mobility and green transport systems.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Road Safety, Active Mobility, E-Mobility and Intelligent Transport Systems, Ms. Hellen Ndegwa, Ag. Assistant Manager at the Industrial Training Centre – NITA Mombasa, said the future of transport is increasingly shifting towards electric mobility, creating an urgent need for institutions to align training programmes with emerging industry demands.

She made the remarks during the three-day inaugural KIHBT International Research Conference staged in Mombasa, which brought together stakeholders in transport, training, technology and infrastructure sectors to discuss emerging trends and innovations shaping the future of mobility.

Ms. Ndegwa noted that the transition from conventional fuel-powered vehicles to electric mobility requires a major shift from traditional mechanical approaches to modern e-mobility systems. According to her, this calls for specialized training in high-voltage safety, use of diagnostic software and specialized tools, as well as technical competencies in batteries, electric motors, inverters and Battery Management Systems (BMS).

She further highlighted several challenges affecting training institutions and the wider EV ecosystem, including shortage of trained technical trainers, high costs of acquiring modern training equipment, inadequate charging infrastructure, limited availability of spare parts, and insufficient systems for battery recycling and disposal.

Ms. Ndegwa emphasized that strengthening the country’s power infrastructure and enhancing support for local manufacturers will play a critical role in accelerating Kenya’s transition from fuel-based transport systems to electric mobility.

As part of its commitment to preparing Kenyan youth for the future of work and the green economy, the Authority has already developed and is implementing Electric Vehicle Technician curriculum for Levels 3 and 4. The programme is aimed at equipping trainees with industry-relevant competencies that match the growing demand for skills in the e-mobility sector.

NITA Leads Push for Climate-Friendly Refrigeration Technologies

As Kenya advances climate action and environmentally sustainable technologies, the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry through the National Ozone Unit (NOU) and HVAC-K, is empowering Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) technicians with critical knowledge on safe and climate-friendly refrigeration practices.

The two-day RAC Technicians’ Awareness Forum, officially opened yesterday, 18th May 2026, by NITA Mombasa Centre Manager Festus Musyoki at the Centre, brought together technicians, industry stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to strengthen professionalism, safety, and environmental compliance within the sector.

Participants were sensitized on safe refrigerant handling, refrigerant recovery procedures, leak testing, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment. Discussions also focused on the phased reduction of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), while promoting environmentally friendly technologies such as hydrocarbons, ammonia, R32, CO₂, and solar-powered refrigeration systems.

The National Ozone Unit was represented by William Melau and Rose Wanga, while HEVAC-K was represented by Hosea Pala.
