VC Prof. Kibwage and Kenya National Innovation Agency Discuss Promoting Research Commercialization and Intellectual Property Rights

Njoro, Egerton 11th May, 2026

Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage today met a team from Kenya National Innovation Agwncy
( KeNIA) who is at the University to discuss on the challenges facing Kenyan Universities on the framework for excellence in Intellectual Property Rights ( IPR) management.

The discussions centered around enhancing the university’s capacity to manage and commercialize research intellectual property rights (IPR), aligning with policy, legal and regulatory framework.

During the engagement, Prof. Kibwage emphasized Egerton University’s commitment to nurturing innovative research and safeguarding intellectual property generated by Academic staff and students.

He expressed optimism that this discussion with KeNIA would significantly boost the university’s innovation and further enabling Researchers commercialize their research works.

He said proper legal frame work should be put in Research Policy including having a clause where researchers would be required to deposit their reach notes with the University for the purposes of consolidating, ownership and future references. This, he said, will even give Professors an opportunity of starting own companies in actualizing their researches while teaching.

The VC underscored the importance of establishing robust frameworks that supports commercialization of research findings, ensuring that innovations benefit both the university and the innovators through ownership.

Prof. Kibwage reaffirmed Egerton University's dedication to creating an environment conducive to culture of innovation, protecting creative outputs, and translating research into impactful solutions for the owners.

The KeNIA team provided insights into government policies and initiatives aimed at incentivizing innovation and protecting intellectual assets.

KeNIA team coordinator Mr. Kwame Chahca, highlighted on strategies to strengthen collaboration, improve awareness about IPR, commercialization pathways among researchers.

A Night of Gratitude: Honoring Our Partners

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (FVMS) extends its deepest appreciation to the partners who made the 2026 Gala Dinner at Sarova Woodlands a resounding success.

This celebration of our 44 graduating BVMS students was made possible through the seamless collaboration of academic, regulatory, and industry leaders.

Special thanks go to our internal team, led by Dr. Paul O. Okumu, Dr. Tina Were, the Dean, and the Egerton FVMS Alumni, whose foundational support guided our graduates. We are equally grateful to our industry sponsors, including: Cosmos Animal Health, Vetnow, Brooke East Africa, CKL, and Farming Systems Kenya for bridging the gap between education and the workforce.

Our gratitude also extends to the VMD, KVA, and KVB for ensuring professional excellence, alongside local clinics like: Small Five, Utunzi, Noble, and Tornado Vet.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (FVMS) hosted a colorful Gala Dinner for the final year Class of 2026 at the Sarova Woodlands Hotel and Spa in Nakuru on Friday, May 8, 2026.

The event brought together 44 Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS) students, faculty members, alumni, and key players in the veterinary industry.

The evening was more than a celebration of academic achievement.

It was a platform for mentorship, networking, and professional growth as the students prepare to transition from university life into the world of veterinary practice.

The students, who have completed their undergraduate studies, interacted with experienced professionals from different sectors of the veterinary field. Conversations centered on career development, opportunities in the industry, and emerging trends shaping veterinary medicine locally and globally.

Industry stakeholders also shared insights on veterinary technology, pharmaceuticals, animal health services, and regulatory compliance.

Mentorship remained at the heart of the discussions throughout the evening.

Students were encouraged to remain committed to clinical excellence, professionalism, and ethical practice while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance in their future careers.

Speaking during the gala dinner, Dean of the Faculty Dr. Caleb Orenge emphasized the importance of building strong professional networks early in one’s career.

He noted that mentorship and industry exposure are critical in preparing students for the realities of professional practice.

Dr. Orenge was recently appointed to the Kenya Veterinary Board by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development for a three-year term beginning March 2026.

His appointment places the Faculty at the center of shaping veterinary training, policy, and professional standards in the country.

The gala dinner was coordinated by Dr. Paul O. Okumu and Dr. Tina Were.

The event also received support from partners including Cosmos Animal Health, Brooke East Africa Limited, and the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA).

As the Class of 2026 prepares for the mandatory one-year government internship programme, the students leave not only as graduands, but also as young professionals connected to mentors, peers, and industry leaders.
