The University was honored to host a delegation from the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), led by Deputy Executive Secretary Dr. Florence Mayega Nakayiwa.

During the courtesy call, Dr. Nakayiwa commended Egerton University for its longstanding leadership and contribution to agricultural training, community engagement, and capacity building across Africa.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics, Research and Extension), Prof. Bernard Aduda, alongside the DVC (Administration, Finance and Planning),
Prof. George Muthaa, warmly received the delegation to discuss strategic pathways for expanding opportunities for young people through higher education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Prof Muthaa described RUFORUM as a vital strategic partner in advancing Egerton University’s mission.

Seven policies have been developed courtesy of the TAGDev 2.0 programme at Egerton University, Prof Aduda explained.

TAGDev Programme Coordinator Prof. Nancy Mungai alongside Dr. Nakayiwa, highlighted the profound success of the TAGDev programme in strengthening university governance, practical learning, and community outreach.

Prof. Bernard Aduda presented a beautiful, symbolic soapstone carving to Dr. Nakayiwa as a gesture of appreciation and continued collaboration.

There was a reaffirmation from both RUFORUM and Egerton University leadership to champion youth employment and agricultural transformation across the continent. 🤝🌾

The commencement of a four-day capacity-building workshop on Competency-Based and Experiential Curriculum Design for Transformative Education Egerton University was facilitated by the Ruforum Network Secretariat under TAGDev 2.0 Program.

The training brings together university leadership, faculty members, and curriculum developers to strengthen institutional capacity in the design, delivery, assessment, and management of Competency-Based Education (CBE).

Day One focuses on the validation of CBE instructors’ modules, aligning content and delivery strategies with experiential learning principles, and enhancing the facilitation skills of module developers.

By investing in innovative and learner-centered approaches, Egerton University is advancing transformative education that equips graduates with the competencies needed to address societal and industry challenges.

At Egerton University’s AgroScience Park, a significant milestone in Kenya–China academic and research cooperation unfolded during a high-level visit by a delegation from Nanjing Agricultural University, comprising professors, lecturers, students, and industry partners.

The visit focused on strengthening collaboration in agricultural innovation, technology exchange, and joint research aimed at improving food systems resilience.

The delegation was received by Egerton University students engaged at the AgroScience Park, including James Kiplagat, Enock Enze, and others, who offered practical insights into ongoing research activities and demonstration trials.

The engagement provided an opportunity for direct interaction on the park’s applied research ecosystem and its role in bridging science and farmer-level adoption.

Agro-science Park is led by Prof Paul Kimurto . He's been instrumental in establishing the Egerton University 's flagship seed varieties like Chelalang and Ndovu.

Representing the Director of AgroScience Park was Confucius Institute Director Prof. Arnold Opiyo, who underscored the importance of international partnerships in advancing agricultural transformation.

Prof Opiyo highlighted the AgroScience Park as a dynamic innovation hub where research, industry engagement, and community outreach converge to generate scalable solutions for food security challenges.

A key focus of the discussions was potential collaboration in regenerative agriculture and climate-resilient crop development.

Both sides expressed interest in advancing technologies that restore soil health, improve water efficiency, and strengthen production systems under climate stress.

Priority crops for collaboration included oil crops such as sunflower, soybean, and canola; legumes including beans, chickpeas, and groundnuts; and cereals such as maize, upland rice, finger millet, bread wheat, spelt wheat, and sorghum.

The delegation was also briefed on Egerton’s integrated innovation pathway—covering technology development, commercialization, industry linkage, and private sector engagement.

Emphasis was placed on demonstration platforms and structured technology transfer models that ensure innovations reach farming communities, particularly in Kenya’s drylands where food insecurity remains a major challenge.

A highlight of the visit was the presentation of improved crop varieties developed under the leadership of Prof. Paul Kimurto and his research team.

These included Chelalang and Tasha beans, zebra bean, Ndovu and Mwangaza groundnuts, snapping finger millets, EUSoy 1 and EUSoy 2 soybean varieties, and improved sorghum lines.

The delegation expressed strong interest in these innovations, noting their potential for adaptation and joint improvement through collaborative research.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to deepen institutional partnerships, enhance researcher and student exchange, and co-develop agricultural technologies that advance productivity, resilience, and food security across both regions.
