The release of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results on January 9, 2026, marks a significant moment for the 996,000 candidates who sat the exams last year. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba presided over the announcement in Eldoret, with the results now accessible to candidates through multiple official channels. This year, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has introduced several notable changes, including a new system for collecting KCSE certificates. Candidates will now receive their certificates from sub-county education offices instead of their former schools. This change is intended to reduce delays often caused by unpaid school fees, a common issue for many students.

During the examination period, 418 candidates were flagged for irregularities, and the marking process was briefly interrupted by a strike at Maryhill Girls High School in Thika, where examiners raised concerns about working conditions. KNEC later addressed these issues, ensuring all examiners were paid as expected. Despite these challenges, the council has confirmed that the results have been finalized and are ready for release as planned.

Candidates can access their results through the official KNEC portal at [https://results.knec.ac.ke](https://results.knec.ac.ke), by sending their index number via SMS to 20076, or by collecting hard copies from their respective schools. The results may include several symbols indicating specific situations. For example, an "X" signifies that a candidate was absent for one or more papers, while a "Y" means the results have been cancelled due to examination irregularities. A "P" indicates that the results are pending due to issues with the candidateโ€™s entry, and a "W" means the results have been withheld for further investigation. Additionally, "U" stands for ungraded results, which occurs when a candidate fails to meet the required criteria.

After receiving their results, candidates are advised to verify their personal details, including their name, index number, and subjects. Any discrepancies or errors should be reported to the school principal or examination officer for correction. The school will then escalate the issue to KNEC for resolution via the Query Management Information System (QMIS). The introduction of the new certificate collection system and improvements in result verification reflect the Ministry of Educationโ€™s ongoing efforts to streamline the examination process and reduce inefficiencies.

As the transition to the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCBE) in 2028 approaches, these changes are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of education in Kenya. With a more efficient system for managing results and certificates, the Ministry is working towards creating a more transparent and accessible education system for all students.
