NextGen Cambodia-China Fellowship Program
[Training Session 3]

Our Fellows continued their learning through a training session on developing strong arguments for International Relations research. The session explored how to move beyond description and opinion by developing a clear claim, connecting it with theoretical logic, and supporting it with evidence.

Fellows also explored how to identify a research puzzle, develop a theoretical or conceptual framework, select appropriate research methodologies and methods, and build arguments that can be critically examined and tested.

We thank our trainer, Dr. PO Sovinda, Senior Lecturer at IISPP, for sharing his expertise and practical guidance with our Fellows as they develop their research and writing skills.

A commentary article by Ms. Freya Song, Special Correspondent for Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP): A survey of 2,380 young Cambodians found that 94.60% had never been to China, yet 94.45% identified China as the overseas destination they most want to visit, while 88.57% chose China as their preferred destination for studying abroad.

“Never been to China, yet most want to go. From “seeing” to “understanding,” and from “aspiration” to “engagement,” there is still work to be done together by Cambodia and China.

Survey Report Launch & Policy Dialogue on Cambodian Youth's Perceptions of Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchanges

On 14 August 2026, the Cambodia 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Research Center (CMSRRC) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), in collaboration with the Center for Cambodian Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), the ASEAN Study Center of The Charhar Institute, and the Cultural Exchange Network of Cambodia and China (CENCC), officially launched the 2025 Survey Report on Cambodian Youth's Perceptions of Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchanges — one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind, gathering over 2,300 responses from Cambodian Gen Z across the nation.

The event brought together distinguished representatives from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Cambodia, officials from various government ministries, and participants from universities, think tanks, research and private institutions, and civil society organizations.

A policy dialogue was also convened alongside the launch to facilitate constructive exchanges on how the survey findings can inform evidence-based bilateral cooperation — contributing to the shared vision of building an All-weather Cambodia-China Community with a Shared Future in the New Era. 🇰🇭🇨🇳

NextGen Cambodia-China Fellowship Program
[Training Sessions 1 & 2]

Our Fellows have successfully completed the first two training sessions of the Fellowship, exploring China's Global Initiatives and Cambodia's approach to engaging with them. Through expert-led discussions, Fellows gained a deeper understanding of the Global Security Initiative (GSI), Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), Global Governance Initiative (GGI), China's role in global multilateralism, and the concept of a Community with a Shared Future.

These sessions laid the conceptual foundation for the Fellowship, equipping Fellows with the knowledge and perspectives that will support their research and policy analysis throughout the programme.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our distinguished trainers, Assoc. Prof. NEAK Chandarith and Prof. CHHEANG Vannarith, for sharing their expertise and valuable insights. Stay tuned as we continue to share highlights from the Fellowship.
