SETTING THE MIND TO WIN BY CERTIFYING βMAXWELLβ LEADERSHIP
Of the around 75 best-selling books on leadership, authored by John C. Maxwell, I have read 38 of them. It is said that you know well βMaxwellβ leadership if you have at least read 30 of his books. This is a huge challenge for students and practitioners of leadership.
John C. Maxwell was named in year 2019 as the number 1 leadership guru, who sums up the definition of leadership as --- βLeadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.β So, if leadership is influence, we ask: βHow do we influence others?β
Influence works two ways: positively or negatively. What matters most when it comes to influence is having a positive attitude. Our attitude is contagious and a positive attitude can shift the entire energy of an organization. That is why J.C. Maxwell emphasizes the importance of a positive attitude for leaders.
According to Maxwell, the heart of leadership is serving others first, before ourselves. Most people do not equate leadership to service. Rather than epitomizing humility, influence and meeting people where they are at, too many leaders think being a leader means power and authority. Organizations which are led by self-described servant leaders possess leadership qualities which are people-centric, modeling servant leadership behavior and valuing service to others. These leaders are humble β allowing their behavior to communicate their values and their appreciation for their people β and they are vigilant β in promoting the right attitude and belief systems that encourage others to succeed.
J.C. Maxwell rationalizes that because someone has the title of leader, does not mean s/he is a leader. The greatest reflection on a leader, being a true leader, is whether or not the person is influencing anyone. And, of course, the first place we will see that is in the leaderβs people. An organization is only as great as its people. If the people are not following, the leader is not leading.
