NEREC Graduate Fellows Program (2021)_Announcement
Purpose To train and nurture next-generation international leaders in nuclear nonproliferation and related nuclear policy
Eligibility Graduate Students in good academic standing in major colleges/universities
Period July 11 – August 13 (5 weeks)
Due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, NEREC Summer Fellows Program will be conducted as on-line and off-line hybrid as in the case of the 2020 program. (Off-line participation may be allowed if the quarantine requirements of South Korean government can be met. More details on how the program is to be conducted will be announced in May.)
Location KAIST (Daejeon) or Jeju, South Korea
Program (conducted in English)
Group research work with international peer students with diverse background on selected topics of nuclear nonproliferation or related nuclear policy issues
Participation and poster presentation at NEREC Conference on Nuclear Nonproliferation
Class participation in ‘Nuclear Risk Management’ by Prof. Man-Sung Yim of KAIST
Field trips to Seoul, Gyeongju, and China and Japan
Seoul – Visit to governmental institutions and policy research institutes including the National Assembly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, private and government think-tanks, and tour of DMZ area
Gyeongju – Visit to major nuclear facilities and research institutes in Daejeon, Gyeongju and Changwon including Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control, Wolsong Nuclear power plant, Doosan Heavy Industry, etc.
China and Japan – NEREC Fellows Workshops with International Partners (Virtual Meeting)
Korean cultural events
Benefits
NEREC covers lodging and meals for non-resident students for 5 weeks and all costs related to field trips, cultural events and conference participation. The benefits amount to approximately $3,000.
Credits
All students receive Nuclear Nonproliferation Course Certificate upon successful completion. Students can get a letter from the Director of NEREC endorsing the award of equivalent course credits from his/her university.

Travel Grants (for applicants from non-OECD countries)
NEREC offers “need-based” round trip airfare to one qualified graduate fellow from non-OECD countries. Applicant who wishes to receive the grant should submit their “NEREC Travel Grant Application” with justification for the need along with their application of the program. The successful applicant will be notified via email approximately by the 4th week of April.
Selection Process
Application Deadline March 26 The application must be submitted online.
Evaluation March 29 to April 9 Skype interview may be included.
Decision Notification April 12 by email
Confirmation by Student April 16 by email
*NEREC will conduct a reference check via email during the selection process

2021 NEREC Young Fellows Program Application – Resume and personal statement, names/contact info for two references (including your academic advisor)
Academic transcripts of Bachelor’s degree - A copy of an official one or computer printout is acceptable.
NEREC Travel Grant Application (only if applicable)
In order to be considered for review, the application package must be submitted by March 26 to Ms. Jieun Choi at [email protected].
