Global Institute of Theology at Yonsei University Global Institute of Theology(GIT) in Yonsei University

The Global Institute of Theology known by its acronym GIT is an International Students Only Theological Graduate School of the United Graduate School of Theology (UGST), Yonsei University. As a brainchild of the 2013 Busan WCC assembly, the school nurtures and prepares Church leaders around the world with theological tools to meet contemporary issues. The spirit behind GIT is the indebtedness of t

he Korean Church to the early missionaries for their sacrifice and help in enabling their unprecedented revival and so pushes them to devote themselves to the world by passing over this vision to other churches around the world. The purpose of GIT is to provide professional theological education to theologians and ministers in the rapidly growing churches of China, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. The aim is to raise both the standard of theological education and church leaders, and to contribute to the development of the Global Church. GIT offers full scholarship including room and board for its masters (Th.M) and doctoral programs (Ph.D.). Upon admission, all the students constitute the GIT Student community from whom members are elected into the GIT Student Committee.

We joyfully celebrate the publication of a thought-provoking article by our student Ma. G. J. Bigornia, PhD candidate in Philosophy of Religion at GIT, Yonsei University.

Article: Tadek Dance as a Decolonial Theo-Cosmology
Journal: Acta Theologica (2025)

This work courageously brings indigenous wisdom to the center of theological reflection. By engaging Tadek, a traditional dance of the Itneg people in the Philippine Cordillera, the article invites us to see theology not only as something written or spoken—but also danced, embodied, and lived.

Through Tadek, theology becomes movement, solidarity, and sacred interconnectedness—opening new horizons for decolonial thought, eco-spirituality, and planetary justice. It reminds us that indigenous practices are not marginal traditions, but vital sources of wisdom for imagining a more just and interconnected world.

We are deeply proud of this contribution, which honors indigenous voices and creatively expands the boundaries of theo-cosmological discourse.
Congratulations, Ma. G. J. Bigornia, on this meaningful and inspiring publication!

We are delighted to celebrate the publication of a scholarly article by our student V. Tendanan, PhD candidate in Systematic Theology and Theology of Culture at GIT Yonsei University

Article Title: “Eternal Bonds: Families as Divine Stewardship beyond the World”
Journal: Acta Theologica (2025)

This insightful article offers a profound theological reflection on the parent–child relationship, exploring family bonds as an expression of divine stewardship that transcends conventional boundaries. Drawing from Christian theology and the Torajan cultural practice of Passiliran, the study reimagines family relationships as sacred, interconnected, and sustainable—opening meaningful pathways toward healing, care, and harmony within family systems.

We are incredibly proud of this academic achievement and the depth of thought, cultural sensitivity, and theological rigor it represents. Such work not only contributes to global theological discourse but also reflects the dedication and scholarly excellence of our students.

Please join us in congratulating V. Tendanan on this remarkable accomplishment!

Mission from the Margins with Prof. Shakespeare

This week our class stepped into the practice of seeing with clarity, listening with compassion, and letting those encounters reshape how we understand mission. The margins become teachers. Stories become lenses. Transformation begins the moment we allow ourselves to be interrupted by the realities of others.

Grateful for a space in the class that forms us to serve with humility, courage, and attentive presence.

Publication Alert!
The Global Institute of Theology extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Parulihan Sipayung for his recent book chapter, “Wrestling for Gender Justice: Jaulung Wismar Saragih’s (GKPS) Contribution for Gender Justice in Indonesia.”
In this significant work, Dr. Sipayung brings into focus the theological and social struggles surrounding gender justice within the Indonesian church context. By engaging the legacy of Jaulung Wismar Saragih and the GKPS tradition, his chapter expounds on how Christian faith communities can become spaces of transformation where justice and compassion meet. His writing situates Indonesia’s complex cultural, ethnic, and religious landscape as both a challenge and a wellspring for creative theological reflection.
We at GIT celebrate this contribution not only as an academic achievement but as a living expression of Dr. Sipayung’s ongoing commitment to contextual and liberative theology. Having earned his Ph.D. in World Christianity and Mission Studies (2020–2023), and now serving as Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Theology, Abdi Sabda Theological Seminary in Medan, Indonesia, Dr. Sipayung continues to embody a theology deeply rooted in place and profoundly attuned to the global currents of Christian thought.
Your work, Dr Sipayung, reminds us that wrestling for justice is both a theological task and a human vocation. We give thanks for your voice, your courage, and your witness among us.
With deep respect and joy,
Your GIT Family

Congratulations to Dadzie Richmond, major in World Christianity and Mission Studies, on the publication of his book chapter titled:

“Pastoral Reframing in Response to Environmental Degradation: An Examination of Galamsey’s Impact in Ghana.”

In this work, Richmond explores how pastoral care can respond to the urgent challenges of environmental degradation, offering new ways of thinking about faith, creation, and justice in the Ghanaian context.

Again, congratulations Richmond for this achievement and contribution to the ongoing discourse that bridges theology, ecology, and community transformation — a powerful step toward a more caring and sustainable world.

Congratulations to Koh XinXian, Kjelti, a Th.M. student in Church History, for presenting her paper at the 7th GNPT Consultation, Fuller Seminary, on September 9, 2025.

📖 Her paper, “Among Neighbors: A Church Without Walls in Singapore’s Secular Context,” explores how sacredness emerges not only through material and symbolic boundaries but also through openness, hospitality, and relational flourishing. Like the overflowing cup of Psalm 23, sacred space extends beyond walls to inspire welcome and belonging for both worshippers and neighbors.

We celebrate your thoughtful contribution, Kjelti, and the way you bring theology into dialogue with lived community!
