국립국제교육원 - Niied NIIED is an executive agency of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development of Korea; entrusted to provide quality education.

NIIED is an executive government institute under the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. NIIED aims at nurturing and fostering the development of human resources in accordance with the needs of an ever-increasing globalized world. The following are some of the missions of NIIED:
First, NIIED has designed a number of ‘Study in Korea’ projects such as the Korean Government Global

Scholarship Program and ‘Study in Korea’ Exhibitions as a promotion strategy to invite up to 100,000 international students by the year 2012. Currently, around 94,000 international students are enrolled in higher education institutions of Korea. Parallel to these programs, NIIED also runs Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program that is aimed to boost global cooperation and exchange and strengthen international competitiveness. GKS is a program that selects and invites up to 400 outstanding international students per year to study at Korean universities. Currently around 2,000 scholarship students are enrolled in Korean institutions through this program and more than 4,000 international students from around 130 countries have so far completed their education and have established an overseas human network useful for national development. There are also a number of outstanding students invited to study in colleges and graduate schools of Korea from the countries of our visitors today. Second, NIIED runs English Program in Korea (EPIK) since 1995 with native assistant teachers invited to Korea to help enhance English language communication ability of students. Currently, there are around 8,400 native English teachers placed in Korean primary and middle schools throughout the country contributing to the strengthening of practical English language education at the schools. The teachers are invited from 7 countries, namely the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the Republic of South Africa. Third, we manage the Teach and Learn in Korea (TaLK) program to give our Korean children living in rural areas a chance to learn English from native English teachers. The TaLK Program is an international volunteer program just like the Peace Corps to help people outside Korea understand Korean culture and help Koreans understand the cultures of other countries by overseas young volunteers who want to learn the Korean culture and teach English in Korea. The TaLK program is also an international scholarship program just like the Fulbright to increase mutual understanding between the people of Korea and other countries by overseas scholars who want to teach English and learn Korean culture in Korea. Third, NIIED also has put much effort to substantiate the education of overseas Koreans exceeding 7.4 million who have set their lives in more than 150 countries throughout the world. This has been done by operating educational programs to raise awareness of their Korean identity and deepen their understanding of Korean culture. NIIED had published and distributed textbooks for the overseas Koreans and had also invited their children as well as the teachers of overseas Korean schools for training. Moreover, NIIED supervises the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) that measures and evaluates the fluency and academic achievement of non-native speakers of Korean language and overseas Koreans. TOPIK is conducted in Korea and in 55 other countries in more than 179 regions. It is used as a tool to evaluate international students who will join Korean colleges or who are preparing to be employed in Korean companies. Around 934, 000 examinees have so far seated for the test since it begun to be conducted in 1997. Recently, a growing number of foreigners are taking TOPIK by the influence of the Korean wave. NIIED also undertakes Nationally initiated teachers exchange, as well as student and youth exchange programs. Through these programs, NIIED is faithfully performing its roles and functions as a pioneer institute of overseas Korean education as well as the central institution of international education exchange. Especially, NIIED has been recognized as the best education and training organization of the year 2012 and got the award of Korean President for “Performance-based Comprehensive Evaluation”
