Ewha GSIS was established in March 1997 to spearhead the effort to produce the finest global leaders for the 21st century. The Korean government awarded Ewha a five-year grant to establish a GSIS that would provide the intellectual breadth and professional development necessary to successfully launch women into the international arena.

On May 22, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Jae-bok Chang, Chief Executive Officer of the CityNet Secretariat and former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India, for a special lecture. 🌍

Drawing on more than three decades of diplomatic experience, Mr. Chang shared stories and insights from the field, covering protocol affairs, multilateral diplomacy, public diplomacy, and city diplomacy. 🤝

He highlighted the meaning of protocol in international relations, sharing the message that “Protocol is the language of respect, order, and trust among nations.” He also emphasized that multilateral diplomacy requires active listening, consensus-building, and mutual understanding among diverse stakeholders. 🧩

Mr. Chang also reflected on his experiences at UNESCO and as Ambassador to India, showing how cultural empathy and authentic participation can strengthen international relationships and build meaningful connections across borders. ✨

He emphasized that many of today’s global challenges—including climate change, disaster resilience, social inclusion, and digital transformation—are experienced first in cities and require collaborative, city-to-city solutions. 🌱

Concluding the session, Mr. Chang encouraged students to develop cross-cultural communication, leadership, and partnership-building skills, reminding us that the future of international cooperation lies in connecting people, cities, and ideas across borders and building trust. 🌐💡

5월 22일, 저희 이화여대 국제대학원은 시티넷 사무국 대표이자 전 주인도 대한민국대사인 장재복 대표를 모시고 특별강연을 진행했습니다. 🌍

장 대표는 30년이 넘는 외교관 경험을 바탕으로 의전, 다자외교, 공공외교, 그리고 도시외교에 이르는 다양한 현장 이야기를 들려주셨습니다. 🤝

특히 국제관계에서 의전이 갖는 의미를 설명하며, “의전은 국가 간 존중, 질서, 신뢰의 언어”라는 메시지를 전해 주셨습니다. 또한 다자외교에는 적극적인 경청, 합의 형성, 다양한 이해관계자 간 상호 이해가 중요하다고 강조하셨습니다. 🧩

유네스코 근무 경험과 주인도대사 시절의 공공외교 사례도 소개해 주셨습니다. 문화적 공감과 진정성 있는 참여가 어떻게 국제관계를 강화하고, 국경을 넘어 의미 있는 유대를 만들 수 있는지 생생하게 보여주셨습니다. ✨

장 대표는 기후변화, 재난 회복력, 사회적 포용, 디지털 전환 등 오늘날의 많은 글로벌 과제들이 도시에서 가장 먼저 나타나며, 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 도시 간 협력과 공동의 해법이 필요하다고 강조하셨습니다. 🌱

On May 8, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Hoon Sang Lee from the RIGHT Foundation 🌏

He introduced us to the role of global health R&D in improving equitable access to essential health technologies, highlighting how the RIGHT Foundation supports the development of vaccines, diagnostics, therapeutics, and digital health technologies for low- and middle-income countries 💉🩺

The lecture also explored the importance of designing healthcare technologies with “global access” in mind, considering affordability, accessibility, and implementation in resource-limited settings 🌍

Dr. Lee further shared examples of RIGHT-supported projects, including AI-powered tuberculosis screening tools, malaria diagnostic platforms, typhoid conjugate vaccines, and international vaccine manufacturing training programs involving participants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America 🤖📊

He also emphasized the importance of international collaboration, showcasing partnerships with organizations such as WHO, Gavi, UNICEF, and CEPI to address global health challenges including pandemics, infectious diseases, and health inequities 🤝

Concluding the lecture, Dr. Lee encouraged us to think beyond technological advancement alone and consider how innovation can be translated into equitable healthcare access for communities around the world ✨

박사님께서는 필수 보건 기술에 대한 공평한 접근성을 확보하기 위한 글로벌 보건 연구개발(R&D) 분야의 역할을 소개해주셨습니다. 또한, RIGHT 재단이 저소득 및 중간 소득 국가를 위한 백신, 진단법, 치료제, 디지털 보건 기술 개발을 어떻게 지원하는지 설명해 주셨습니다 💉🩺

또한 자원 제약이 환경에서 ‘글로벌 접근성’을 염두에 두고 보건 기술을 설계하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 강조해주셨습니다 🌍

박사님은 AI 기반 결핵 선별 도구, 말라리아 진단 플랫폼, 장티푸스 복합 백신, 그리고 아시아, 아프리카, 라틴 아메리카 참가자들이 참여하는 국제 백신 제조 교육 프로그램 등 RIGHT가 지원하는 프로젝트 사례들을 공유해셨습니다 🤖📊

또한, 팬데믹, 감염병, 건강 불평등 등 글로벌 보건 과제를 해결하기 위해 WHO, Gavi, 유니세프(UNICEF), CEPI와 같은 기관들과의 파트너십을 소개하시며 국제 협력이 얼마나 중요한지를 설명해주셨습니다 🤝

On May 1, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Ms. Kyungmi from the Inter-American Development Bank 🌎

She introduced us to the role of the IDB in supporting economic and social development across Latin America and the Caribbean through financing, technical cooperation, and partnerships with governments and private-sector organizations 💡

The lecture also highlighted her work in the education division, where she supports digital transformation and AI-driven education projects in countries such as Honduras and Peru, focusing on strengthening teachers’ digital competencies and improving access to quality education through technology 📚💻

Ms. Park further shared insights into how international development projects are designed and implemented in the multilateral development bank, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among governments, international organizations, local partners, and researchers 🤝

Drawing from her own career journey across impact investment, research, and international development, she also provided practical advice on career development, highlighting the importance of networking, industry monitoring, work experience, and strong communication and project management skills 🌏✨

She concluded by encouraging students to stay open-minded and adaptable in their career paths, reminding us that while “you cannot plan everything, you can maximize the value of each experience.” 🌱

박컨설턴트님께서는 자금 지원, 기술 협력, 정부 및 민간 기관과의 파트너십을 통해 라틴 아메리카와 카리브해 지역의 경제 및 사회 발전을 지원하는 IDB의 사명에 대해 소개해 주셨습니다 💡

온두라스와 페루 등지에서 교사의 디지털 역량 강화와 기술을 통한 양질의 교육 접근성 향상에 중점을 두고 디지털 전환 및 AI 기반 교육 프로젝트를 지원하는 현재의 업무도 소개해 주었습니다.📚💻

또한 국제 개발 프로젝트가 다자개발은행에서 어떻게 설계되고 실행되는지에 대한 통찰을 공유하며, 정부, 국제기구, 현지 파트너, 연구자 간의 협력이 얼마나 중요한지 강조했습니다 🤝

On April 24, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Yoshio Kajitani from Kagawa University 🌏

He introduced us to disaster risk reduction and disaster risk management, highlighting Kagawa University’s interdisciplinary approach that combines engineering, data science, economics, and social sciences to address complex global risks 📊

The lecture explored major disasters around the world, including the Kobe Earthquake, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, floods in Pakistan and Europe, wildfires in Australia and Korea, and the COVID-19 pandemic 🌊🔥
Drawing from his own field experiences in disaster-affected regions, Dr. Kajitani emphasized the importance of preparedness, resilient infrastructure, evacuation systems, and long-term recovery planning. He also explained how factors such as urbanization, climate change, and social vulnerability can intensify disaster impacts 🌱

In the latter part of the lecture, he introduced the fundamentals of disaster risk assessment, focusing on the relationship between hazards, exposure, and vulnerability, while demonstrating how GIS analysis, data science, and economic modeling can support disaster response and policymaking 🛰️

He concluded by stressing the importance of collective efforts in building more resilient societies in the face of climate change and increasing global risks 🌍✨
