🌿 𝗨𝗪𝗨–𝗨𝗙𝗭 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲-𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: “𝗦𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗖𝗼𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲" 🇱🇰🤝🇩🇪

Uva Wellassa University (UWU) has entered into a five-year research agreement with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Germany, to investigate how hyper-diverse tropical rainforests maintain their exceptional species richness. The project has secured €50,000 in funding and received Sri Lankan Cabinet approval on 7 September 2026.

The project, “SpatioCoexistence,” will use Sri Lanka’s lowland rainforests as a model system, with research centered on the 25-hectare Sinharaja Forest Dynamics Plot. By integrating spatial data with mechanistic models, the research will explore how dispersal limitation, microhabitat heterogeneity, and competition interact to sustain biodiversity.

The project is expected to contribute not only to fundamental ecological theory but also to the development of predictive tools for biodiversity conservation in threatened tropical forest ecosystems.

The research is led by Dr. Sisira Ediriweera, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Uva Wellassa University, and Dr. habil. Thorsten Wiegand, Department of Ecological Modelling, UFZ, Germany, with Mr. Janith Piumal serving as Research Assistant.

Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka is proud to announce that it has been ranked 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟒,𝟑𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 in the Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics) – July 2026, among more than 32,000 higher education institutions worldwide.

This achievement marks an important milestone in the University’s continued journey of academic growth, research visibility, digital presence and institutional advancement.

UWU’s Webometrics progress over the years reflects this continuing development:

These results demonstrate the significant progress made by the University over time and place UWU just outside the national Top 10. Only 63 world-ranking positions separate Uva Wellassa University from the university currently ranked 10th in Sri Lanka.

This achievement has been made possible through the collective support and contribution of all stakeholders, whose efforts over the past few years have significantly enhanced the visibility and recognition of Uva Wellassa University. Under the leadership of 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗕. 𝗪𝗶𝗷𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗮, 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗿, the University continues to move forward with strength and determination.
