The course for the Diploma in Accountancy is the first course in the field of commerce to be setup at technological level at the Ceylon Technical College . This also happened to be the first Organized Course in Accountancy to be started at any institute in Ceylon . Even the Ceylon Accountancy Board - the predecessor of the present day Institute of Chattered Accountants of Ceylon however establishe
d two years earlier, in 1941- remained essentially an examining body until much later time. It was need only as late as 1956, and then the Accountancy Board initiated any scheme of lectures at all for its examinations on any planned basis. Through Institute of Chartered Accountants has now become the main center for training in Accountancy in Ceylon . The Diploma in Accountancy continues to be as popular as it has always been, providing avenue of lucrative employment as Accountants in mercantile firms and Government Co-operations and also serving as a solid spring-board for opening either for entry into the Government Accountants' Service or Local Government Accountants' Service leading to the highest echelon in those services, or as avenues for registration for certain University Examinations, or for entry into the main stream of the Accountancy profession, namely, full-fledged membership of the institute of Chartered Accountants.
