The Department of Geography, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, successfully conducted a knowledge-sharing session on Critical Cartography and Counter-Mapping for Level 3 students of the Department of Integrated Design, University of Moratuwa, on 18 June 2026.
The session, conducted by Senior Lecturer Ravi Nandana Gamachchige, explored the role of critical cartography in understanding spatial representations and introduced counter-mapping techniques relevant to the students’ ongoing City Branding Design Project. Discussions focused on mapping city histories, local identities, internal cultures, and community perceptions as alternative approaches to representing urban spaces.
The session was further enriched by the valuable contributions of Lecturer Chathurangi De Silva and other academic staff from the University of Moratuwa, who actively collaborated in discussions on the practical applications of counter-mapping techniques within design and city-branding contexts.
We thank the students and academic staff of the University of Moratuwa for their enthusiastic participation and look forward to future collaborations.
