Summary Report – Inauguration of the Advance Certificate Course in Caregiving and Ayurveda (First Intake)

The inauguration of the Advance Certificate Course in Caregiving and Ayurveda (First Intake) was successfully held on 09th May 2026 at the Mini Auditorium, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo in hybrid mode. The programme was organized by the Department of Shalya Shalakya and Prasutitantra Kaumarabhritya in collaboration with the Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, with the participation of the Dean of the Faculty, Professor S.P. Molligoda, distinguished guests, academic staff, and newly enrolled students.
The event commenced with the arrival of guests, followed by the Dhanwantari Pooja dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and father of Ayurveda, while chanting the Dhanwantari Stotra by Dr. O.T.M.R.K.S.B. Kalawana. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the traditional oil lamp by the Dean, distinguished guests, and course participants.

The official welcome address was delivered by Professor K.P.K.R. Karunagoda, Coordinator of the Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit. Special addresses were also delivered by Professor S.P. Molligoda, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, and Dr. W.A.S.S. Weerakoon, Head of the Department, emphasizing the importance of caregiving education integrated with Ayurvedic principles in the present healthcare setting.
Course handbooks were distributed among the participants by the Dean, Head of the Department, and the Course Coordinator to facilitate their academic journey. During the orientation session conducted by the Course Coordinator, Dr. O.T.M.R.K.S.B. Kalawana, students were introduced to the objectives, structure, curriculum, academic regulations, and practical training components of the Advance Certificate Course in Caregiving and Ayurveda. Information regarding course coordination, student responsibilities, learning outcomes, and future career opportunities in the caregiving sector was also discussed.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. I.A.M. Leena, Senior Lecturer of the Department, and the programme concluded successfully with active participation and enthusiasm from the students, marking a promising beginning for the first intake of the Advance Certificate Course in Caregiving and Ayurveda. Dr. Kenan Livera served as the compere for the event.

The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine has extended the application deadline for five postgraduate diploma programs until 17 May 2026. These programs are recognized by the University Grants Commission and the Ayurveda Medical Council.

The postgraduate diploma programs include:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Indigenous Orthopedic Treatment
- Postgraduate Diploma in Ayurveda Pharmacology in Nutraceuticals Product Development
- Post Graduate Diploma in Panchakarma
- Postgraduate Diploma in Ayurveda Paediatrics in Child Nutrition
- Postgraduate Diploma in Kaumarabhritya in Stree Swastasanrakshana

The event was brought to fruition through the collective support and Collaboration of the Dean of Faculty of Indigenous Medicine,academic staff, union members, students and all other contributors.

Celebrating Excellence: Faculty of Indigenous Medicine Triumphs at Business Spark 2026

The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, proudly congratulates our outstanding students for their remarkable achievement at Business Spark 2026, an All-Island Business Idea Competition organized by the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Management and Finance in collaboration with Middleway Ventures.

Demonstrating exceptional creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit, two students from our faculty emerged as winners, securing both 1st place and 2nd place among participants from across Sri Lanka. Tree Planting Ceremony – Sinhala and Hindu New Year 2026

The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, successfully conducted a Tree Planting Ceremony in accordance with traditional Sinhala and Hindu New Year (Avurudu) rituals on 23rd April 2026 at 9:01 a.m., the designated auspicious time (nekath) for planting.

The event was held in front of the plant house of the faculty premises and was organized by the Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine, in collaboration with the Environmental Committee of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine.
The ceremony was graced by the Dean, Prof. S.P. Molligoda, adding significance to the occasion. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of Ayurveda and Unani academic staff, non-academic staff, and undergraduate students, demonstrating a collective commitment to environmental responsibility.

In keeping with traditional customs, participants were dressed in golden/yellow attire, symbolizing prosperity and auspicious beginnings. Following the tree planting activity, refreshments (Osupan) were served to all attendees.

This initiative highlighted the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge systems with environmental sustainability practices, while reinforcing cultural values associated with the Sinhala and Hindu New Year. It also served as a platform to promote environmental awareness and strengthen community engagement within the faculty.

Overall, the ceremony was successfully conducted, reflecting the Faculty’s ongoing dedication to sustainability.
