Celebration of Global Breastfeeding Week – August 2026

Celebrating the Global Breastfeeding Week in the month of August 2026, the Department of Ayurveda Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics organized an awareness program in Collaboration with the Career Guidance Unit of Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, and department of Moelijat, University of Colombo.
Under the SDG 2 aims to achieve "zero hunger", a group of BAMS students of the faculty performed a short awareness drama on the importance of breastfeeding for the staff members of the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation on 31.08.2026 from 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm at the auditorium of the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation.
The programme was intended to create awareness about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and child, while addressing some common misconceptions and highlighting the importance of family and workplace support for breastfeeding mothers.
We believe that this programme was a valuable health-awareness activity for the staff and also provided our students with an opportunity to enhance their aesthetic performs, share their knowledge and health-promotional messages with the community.

🌿 Bridging Indigenous Medicine & Modern Oncology 🌿

The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, successfully hosted the Pre-Conference International Forum on Cooperative Oncology on 20th August 2026, as an official pre-conference event of iCAUST 2026!
Organized by the Department of Ayurveda Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Gynaecology, Obstetrics & Paediatrics (FIM), in collaboration with the PPHS Foundation, India, the forum brought together Ayurveda physicians, pharmacologists, and researchers from Sri Lanka, India, Germany, and the USA 🇱🇰🇮🇳🇩🇪🇺🇸
✨ Highlights of the day:
🔹 7 keynote sessions on cooperative cancer care, emergency management, and holistic oncology
🔹 Discussions on pharmaceutical science, nanomedicine, and drug safety in integrative care
🔹 A thought-provoking session on the epistemology of evidence in indigenous knowledge systems
🔹 Lively Q&A and knowledge-sharing between Ayurveda and modern oncology experts
🎯 Key takeaway: Cooperative, evidence-based models combining Ayurveda and modern oncology are already making a difference — and this forum strengthened the path toward stronger frameworks, research collaboration, and international partnership ahead of iCAUST 2026.
Specialists of the Ayurveda, Interested participants, faculty and invitees came together for a day of learning, dialogue, and cooperation.

A workshop on “Awareness on Smokeless To***co: Health Risks, Prevention, and Professional Responsibility” was conducted on 04th August 2026 from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm at the Main Auditorium, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. The programme was organized by the Subcommittee on Smokeless To***co of the National Authority on To***co and Alcohol (NATA) in collaboration with the Career Guidance Unit (CGU), Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. Workshop was aimed at improving students’ awareness of the health consequences, preventive strategies and professional responsibilities associated with smokeless to***co use.

Dean’s List and Faculty Awards Ceremony 2025
The Dean’s List and Faculty Awards Ceremony 2025 of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, was organized to recognize and celebrate the academic excellence, dedication, and outstanding achievements of students of the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) and Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) degree programmes.
The ceremony was held on 21 August 2026 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. The event brought together the Dean, academic and administrative staff, and students to honour students who demonstrated exceptional academic performance and excellence.
The Dean’s List Awards recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance, while the Faculty Awards acknowledge excellence in diverse areas including academic achievement, leadership, research, extracurricular activities, and other talents.
The ceremony commenced with the academic procession, followed by the National Anthem and Faculty Song and the traditional lighting of the oil lamp. The programme included a welcome address by Prof. N. Fahamiya, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, followed by the address of the Chief Guest, Prof. S. P. Molligoda, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. Certificates were subsequently presented to the award recipients, followed by Dr. J.M. Dahanayake’s vote of thanks and a group photograph with refreshments.
A significant number of students achieved First Class results from both BAMS (40 students) and BUMS (20 students) programmes were recognized on the Dean’s List 2025, with awardees from the First Professional, Second Professional, and Final Professional examinations.
The Faculty Award 2025 was presented to Ms. A.S.S. Warnakulasooriya, a student of the Final Professional BAMS 2020/2021 batch, in recognition of her outstanding overall performance.
In their messages, the Vice Chancellor and Dean emphasized that these achievements represent not only intellectual ability but also commitment, self-discipline, responsibility, integrity, and perseverance. They also acknowledged the important contributions of academic and non-academic staff, mentors, parents, and families in supporting students throughout their academic journey.
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine congratulates all award recipients for their remarkable achievements and encourages them to continue striving for excellence and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of Ayurveda, Unani medicine, and healthcare.

General Convocation 2025 – Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo—the premier institution for Indigenous medical education in Sri Lanka and the highest-ranked university in the country—held its General Convocation for the 2025 graduates on 29 August 2026 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).
The ceremony was a grand and memorable occasion, attended by graduates, their parents, distinguished guests, and members of the academic community. It marked a significant milestone in the graduates' lives and provided an opportunity for parents and well-wishers to share in the joy and pride of their children's academic achievements.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Prof. Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, the Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, Prof. SP Molligoda, and numerous academic staff members representing the six Departments of the Faculty graced the occasion.
A total of 156 undergraduates were awarded the Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree, and 38 undergraduates were awarded the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) degree, representing the 2018/2019 academic year. The ceremony also recognized outstanding academic achievements through the presentation of a range of awards, prizes, and gold medals to students who demonstrated exceptional performance throughout their five years of study at the faculty.
