How would you react if you received a phone call claiming that you had been awarded the Nobel Prize? Structural biologist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan couldn't believe that he had been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

In October 13 years ago, Ramakrishnan was in a bad mood as his day had not started well. His bike had gotten a flat tire on his way to work which caused him to arrive late to his office at University of Cambridge.

Just as he arrived at the office the telephone rang: โ€œThis is an important phone call from Stockholm โ€“ please hold.โ€ He answered angrily: โ€œWhoever put you up to this โ€“ I donโ€™t believe you!โ€ The general secretary then came on to congratulate the newly awarded chemistry laureate, who still was very sceptical.

The general secretary tried to convince him that it was true but it wasn't until Ramakrishnan got to speak with the committee member Mรฅns Ehrenberg (who he had met before) that he was convinced. He then heard the laughter in the background - he was on loud speaker...

Double Nobel Prize laureate Linus Pauling is the only person to have received two unshared Nobel Prizes.

Pauling was a chemist who lived on the frontiers of science. Working in the 1930s, he was among the pioneers who used quantum mechanics to understand and describe chemical bonding. His interests and contributions were many โ€“ he published the structure of the alpha helix, investigated sickle cell anaemia as the first molecular disease, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954.

After the bombing of Hiroshima, Pauling turned his attention to a different cause: peace. He campaigned vehemently against nuclear weapons and spearheaded a petition to ban nuclear testing. His efforts led to a second prize โ€“ the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize "for his fight against the nuclear arms race between East and West."
