Chemical Engineering Technology
This article is about the chemical engineering diploma courses offered by the Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa. First, I will introduce the Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa. The Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa is the only institute in the government university system to obtain an engineering diploma. Through this, an engineering diploma can be obtained in 10 fields. Also, the Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa (ITUM), or NDT has a proud history of 83 years. In this article, you can learn about the chemical engineering diploma course, which is a special diploma course among these courses.
The Chemical Engineering Diploma is unique because the Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa is the only institute in Sri Lanka that offers a Chemical Engineering Diploma. For this, 50 students are recruited per year. The basic qualifications required to be admitted for this course are; you must have passed the G.E.C. Advanced level examination in the mathematics stream and, you must pass the Aptitude test conducted by ITUM. You have to study the chemical engineering diploma for three years. During the first two years, you’ll be given the theoretical knowledge (semesters 1 to 4) and during the third year, you’ll be given the chance to do your internship (industrial training) in two different institutes as 6 months per each (semesters 5 to 6). The new technologies and all the facilities for this diploma course have been provided by Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa. Consisting of many practical tests, this diploma produces skilled practical incorporated chemical engineers.
* Food proceeding industry (Sugar manufacturing, dairy products, beverages, canneries)
* General manufacturing industry (cement, paper, soaps, detergent, ceramic products, and Petroleum processing)
* Products related to Rubber, Dry Rubber (Tire), plastic, and latex.
* Pharmaceutical industry and Paint industry.
* Sales and Marketing of Chemical and process related Equipment and Services in various industries.
As mentioned earlier, you can have the theoretical knowledge in the first two years (Semesters 1 to 4) then the practical training (Semesters 5 to 6) can be obtained from the leading institutions in Sri Lanka, for example, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, food processing (Sugar, dairy products such as ice cream, milk powder, etc. ..) elephant house ice cream, cement factory (insee, Tokiyo..), sugar factories, Rubber products related (Tire production, latex gloves, Plastic) tire factories (DSI, Mechalin), Textile and clothing industry like leading Garments in Sri Lanka, and Beverage factories.
After completing this diploma course, you can start working as a chemical engineer (Incorporated engineer / Assistant engineer /Engineering Technologist / Executive). You can advance in the job based on your experience.
Also, after completing the diploma, you will be considered as an engineering technologist. In addition to that, you can also pursue further education, an MSc master’s degree from Colombo University, an MBA from University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Open University. Moreover, you can study for a master’s degree, or a PhD based on your experience in your field of work.
At last, but not least, the chemical engineering diploma in the Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa has ranked well among the engineering diplomas available in Sri Lanka, and also it has a high job market.
