𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝟏𝟎𝟏 – 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭

Anemoia (noun) - Nostalgia for a time or a place one has never known.

This is the exact word that would describe the feeling I get whenever I see screenshots of old websites such as the websites designed with plain HTML and CSS, with all the silly GIFs and wacky designs, and the websites from the ‘Golden Age’ of the Internet. In the early 2000s, when the internet became accessible to general citizens, it was a place for endless opportunities and imagination. The arrival of internet chatrooms, online forums, and social media platforms such as MySpace, with the rise of YouTube, truly brought meaning to the phrase ‘World Wide Web’. It is the time that I wish I could have experienced first-hand to truly explore the 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵 of the internet.

The exponential growth of Facebook in the late 2000s fundamentally transformed the architecture of the Internet, paving the way for Web 2.0. Web 2.0, which is based on user-generated content enables the users to create, share, and consume content like never before. The amount of data produced also led to an increase of the collection of data by several entities such as data-brokers, government agencies, advertisers, and hackers.

Web 2.0 lets advertisements be a part of the internet. Now the advertisers could reach their audience on an unimaginable scale. Using the vast amount of data collected from the user, they were able to create highly targeted personalized advertisements. We all have heard the famous story about Target shows pregnancy related advertisements regarding a teenage girl even before her father knew that she was pregnant [1]. This small incident proves to us how intrusive the data collection can be.

Some might say that ‘I’d prefer to see advertisements that are relevant to me, rather than unrelated ones.’ This reminds me of the scandal related to the 2016 US Presidential Election, where Cambridge Analytica - a firm specialized in using online data to create voter personality profiles - used data from Facebook to manipulate the voters [2]. How many of us would willingly let a big company sway our voting choices? We can find a lot of similar incidents like this. Such incidents highlight the importance of protecting our digital privacy.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨?

⦿ Clear your browser cookies periodically – A cookie is a small piece of data generated by a website and saved on our web browser. It is used to remember information about us when we revisit the same website. While cookies are used in useful things like session management, some third-party cookies track our behavior on the internet. By clearing the cookies, the trackers will have a harder time following us.

⦿ Install an ad blocker – All modern browsers support installing add-ons. Ad blockers like uBlock Origin will greatly improve online privacy by hiding the ads and automatically blocking third- party trackers.

⦿ Limit what you share online – Most of us love to share every aspect of our life on social media, but it comes at a cost of our privacy. It is better to avoid posting unnecessary information online and minimize the data you leave behind.

⦿ Use end-to-end encrypted messaging services – E2E encrypted messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal we could prevent our data from leaking to a third-party.

⦿ Use privacy-respecting service providers – There is a well-known saying on the internet: "If something is free, you are the product." According to that, try to avoid using free services when possible. Also, make sure to understand the privacy policies of a service before using it.

⦿ Compartmentalize your work-flow – It is the best practice to use different browsers for different purposes such as work and personal use. Most of the modern browsers have the feature to create multiple profiles. Make use of that feature to separate your online personas.

Maintaining online privacy is a balancing act with 𝘮𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘤𝘺 on one end, and 𝘮𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 on the other end. Furthermore, one should find a balance between privacy and convenience. After all, there is no point in having utmost privacy if it affects the ability to browse the internet with ease. With this in mind, we should aim for a gradual transition towards a more private online life.

UI design is more focused on the appearance and overall feel of a design. Also, it is a craft where the designer creates an essential aspect of the UX. A UI designer focuses on the UI, which includes the layout visuals, and interactive elements of an app or website. To attain a successful UI design, you must be considerate of the basics of design principles, accessibility, color theory, and typography. In short, this article assists you in developing a systematic approach toward UI design that is widely applicable across a range of projects.

Millions of people today depend on mobile devices, laptops, and most importantly, network connections to complete their day-to-day tasks and business workflows. Thus, the importance of a good UI plays a vital role in today’s modern world. Boosting self-assurance and attracting new clients have caught up with a wider effect on UI design. A well-crafted UI creates a sense of trustworthiness on your website, instilling confidence in users. Also, a well-designed, user-friendly, informative, and visually pleasing website naturally draws customers in. In the constantly competitive landscape, rivals are consistently striving to enhance their UI and design to capture the same audience that you are working hard to impress. A flexible UI is crucial because it can adjust various screen dimensions, devices, and user preferences. For beginners embarking on their journey into UI design, the prospect may initially appear daunting. However, by embracing a set of fundamental best practices, you can forge designs that not only captivate the eye but also serve their intended purposes with the utmost effectiveness. In this concise guide, we will delve into some of the best UI design practices, providing invaluable insights to assist beginners in navigating this creative realm. [2]

1. User-centered design:
The design should prioritize the needs, requirements, preferences, and behaviors of the end users throughout the entire designing process. You have to make sure to consider the main points and go accordingly. The design developed from the user’s perspective will create an effective interaction between your system and the user. Thus, the target goal can be satisfied.

2. Maintain simplicity and consistency:
Keep the interface distinct and clean. Display things straightforward. Deliver only the core functionalities and avoid unnecessary distractions and complexities. Ensuring the elements look the same across different parts of the application or website you developed. Also, it presents information progressively rather than creating an overwhelming background at the beginning itself.

3. Effective use of space:
Readability, usability, aesthetic appeal, and visually pleasing interfaces can be crafted, and better user experience will be achieved. Primary contents and headings can absorb a greater amount of white space to reveal a difference, whereas secondary contents and, less importantly, can have a reduced space. Relative to the priority of the content, the use of white space can be maintained.

4. Visual hierarchy through typography:
Typographic hierarchy is a system that organizes copied content in the best way for users’ perception. It promptly affects the first impression of the users and has a greater impact on readability and visual performance. The distinct content should be organized in a good way for users to navigate through easily. It is highly recommended to be mindful of the necessary typography elements like Font and Typeface, Mainline and Baseline, Character Measurement, Ascender and Descender, Alignment, Tracking, Kerning and Leading.

5. Appropriate color choices:
The effective use of colors can evoke emotions, they reflect the personality of your brand and it’s very powerful, like a language to convey captivating information. It can enhance customer navigation capabilities and provoke user-friendly interactions. Ensure your design is not overloaded with multiple colors that can disturb the user's view. Keep in mind that minimalism is often superior in UI design.

6. Test and iterate:
This refers to evaluating, refining, and understanding the flaws in the design. Test your developed design with real users. The prime goal of testing is to identify user satisfaction and user interaction. Iteration occurs after the testing is completed, and the number of iterations depends accordingly. This can reduce development costs and future risks. It is a better practice to test and iterate your design before development and always welcome user feedback and opinions.
