Faculty of Medicine, UOJ The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Jaffna was established on 7th of August 1978. It was ceremonially opened by the Honourable Mr. S. Prof. A. R. C. K. V.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Jaffna was established on 7th of August1978. Nissanka Wijeyeratne, Minister of Education and Higher Education on the 8th of October 1978. The Provincial Hospital Jaffna was declared as the Teaching Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine at the same time. In the beginning, the Pre-clinical course was conducted in the buildings of the Ayurvedic Teaching Hosp

ital and presentlythe Unit of Siddha Medicine of University of Jaffna at Kaithady. The foundation for the building of the Faculty of Medicine at Thirunelvely was laid on the 29th of November 1979 by late Prof. Vithiananthan, first Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna. Hoover, Professor of Biochemistry was the founder Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Hoover with his forty years of University teaching experience was an asset to the Faculty in its formative years. Kanagasuntheram, an internationally renowned Professor of Anatomy was the second Dean of the Faculty. He was responsible for getting endowment for Chairs in Orthopaedic Surgery and Oncology. Sivagnanasundram, Professor of Community Medicine, WHO Consultant, Novelist and Social worker became the third Dean. He introduced several advanced teaching programs in the curriculum of his subject. Balasubramaniam, Professor of Biochemistry succeeded as the fourth Dean. He brought Biotechnology into the Faculty and the Link with SwedishUniversity. Parameswaran, a founder Member of the Faculty and Professor of Physiology held the Office of the Dean from July 1994 to July 1997 when the Faculty experienced the worst crisis due to displacement. Then Dr. R. Rajendraprasad, Head, Department of Anatomy,took over the Deanship and continued with the academic activities under several constrains. Professor Ms. Arasaratnam, Professor of Biochemistry,took up the Deanship and contributed to rebuilding the Faculty by successfully implementing the UGC policy of clearing the backlog and the internal backlog with the whole hearted cooperation of all the staff of the Faculty and Consultants of Jaffna, Batticaloa and Vavuniya Hospitals. The first batch was admitted on 8th August 1979 and they passed the Final MBBS examination in July 1983. The U.G.C is responsible for the admission of students.

Second SAFE OR Program Successfully Completed at Teaching Hospital Jaffna – A Milestone for Safer Surgery

We are delighted to share the successful completion of the second SAFE OR (Safe Anaesthesia and Effective Operating Room) Program at Teaching Hospital Jaffna. The program was coordinated by Prof. S. Rajendra, Consultant Surgeon and SAFE OR Program Coordinator, and directed by Dr. S. Bavani. It was conducted under the expert guidance of a team from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, led by Prof. Vivien Lee. This program was sponsored by JMFOA - UK.

The main objective is to improve team communication in the operating room and enhance patient safety across multiple dimensions.

The program was designed with interactive workstations, where real-life case scenarios were demonstrated with active participation from all attendees.

Consultant Surgeons,Gynaecologists & Obstetricians,Theatre Nursing Staff, Midwives, Surgical and Anaesthetic Doctors

The SAFE OR local teaching faculty, established last year at Jaffna, actively took part in this year’s program. All participants expressed deep gratitude for the training, describing it as an extremely valuable learning experience. In a major step forward, Prof. S. Rajendra organised a planning meeting on 29th April 2026 at the Department of Surgery, CTRB, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.

All representatives praised the SAFE OR initiative and assured their full support to expand the teaching and training program to regional hospitals across Jaffna.

This marks a milestone in the history of operating theatre services in Jaffna, the first initiative with international collaboration to institutionalise and expand SAFE Operating Room practices.

Following the establishment of the Welfare Society of the Faculty of Medicine, the FMPL Cricket Premiere League 1.0 was successfully organized on 18th and 19th April 2026 among the staff members of the University of Jaffna. The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from academic, non-academic, and academic support staff, promoting unity, teamwork, and sportsmanship within the university community.

The event was graced by Prof. R. Surenthirakumaran, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, as the Chief Guest, while Dr. P. A. D. Coonghe, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and President of the Welfare Society, attended as the Guest of Honour. The proceedings were presided over by Mr. T. Sageenthan, Lead of the Sports Committee. The presence of Mr. Ilampirai, Director of the Physical Education Unit, University of Jaffna, further added significance to the occasion.

During the event, the Director of the Physical Education Unit highlighted that the increased utilization of university sports facilities by staff is highly encouraging. He also mentioned that staff members are welcome to access the gymnasium and ground facilities up to 8.00 p.m., promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

In his remarks, the Dean encouraged staff to actively participate in and organize such recreational and sporting activities, emphasizing their importance for physical health, mental well-being, and maintaining a balanced working environment. He further noted that strong collaboration among academic, non-academic, and academic support staff contributes significantly to creating a harmonious and efficient workplace.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the FOM Raiders team emerged as the champions, proudly securing the FMPL 1.0 Trophy.

The FOM Warriors claimed second place, while the FOM Titans achieved third place.

The event concluded on a high note, reflecting the strong spirit of camaraderie, collaboration, and community engagement within the Faculty of Medicine.
