πŸ“’ A Landmark Step Towards Sustainable Value Addition in Sri Lanka's Cinnamon Industry

The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna is pleased to share highlights from today's signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Sri Lanka's first Zero-Waste Cinnamon Processing Center.

This significant initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), and the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna.

The state-of-the-art center will be established at the Faculty of Agriculture premises in Mapalana and is expected to revolutionize cinnamon processing by utilizing every part of the harvested cinnamon plant, transforming biomass residues into value-added products while minimizing waste.

This collaboration represents an important milestone in promoting sustainable agricultural innovation, advancing scientific research, and enhancing the commercialization of high-value Ceylon cinnamon products. It also reflects our continued commitment to supporting national development through research, technology, and industry partnerships.

We sincerely thank the Ministry of Science and Technology for its leadership and collaboration in this nationally significant initiative and look forward to the successful implementation of the project.

🌊 Field Visit | Coastal and Marine Resource Management
On 12th June, the 3rd Year BSc. Green Technology students from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, embarked on an inspiring field visit to the Tangalle area, guided by their course on Coastal and Marine Resource Management.
During the visit, students gained valuable real-world exposure at the Tangalle harbour, where they learned about commercial fish species, harbour operations, fishing boats, freezing systems, and practical experiences shared through discussions with fishermen.
The students also visited the Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences of Ocean University of Sri Lanka, where they attended an informative lecture on coral reefs and observed equipment used for water quality evaluation. The visit further extended to the Rekawa mangrove ecosystem, providing students with an excellent opportunity to understand the ecological importance, biodiversity, and conservation value of mangrove environments.
This field visit offered a meaningful learning experience by connecting classroom knowledge with practical exposure in coastal and marine resource management.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. P.B. Kumara Dr. Pushpitha Palliyaguru and Mr. Upashantha, for their valuable guidance and support, and all the staff members of Department of Agriculture Engineering and Environmental Technology, for their continuous encouragement and support in making this field visit a success.
