Leading the way in marine conservation, the Society of Oceanography & Marine Geology (SOMaG) of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science & Technology, University of Ruhuna, proudly organized a successful coral reef restoration initiative on 4th April 2026 under the signature environmental project “Waves of Hope” by the Udahamulla 306 D7 Leo Club.

With the generous sponsorship of Kangara Holdings (Pvt) Ltd., this impactful program brought together passionate individuals committed to protecting our oceans. As a society driven by scientific knowledge and field expertise, SOMaG played a central role in planning and executing this restoration effort, ensuring meaningful contributions to the recovery and sustainability of coral reef ecosystems.

SOMaG remains committed to advancing ocean conservation through research, education, and active engagement. We look forward to continuing our journey in safeguarding marine ecosystems for future generations.

Have you ever paused to consider the incredible guardians of the oceans of our blue planet?🐋

On International Marine Mammal Day, we must turn our attention to these remarkable warm-blooded, air-breathing creatures from the giant whales🐳 and playful dolphins🐬 to seals, sea lions and gentle manatees and dugongs.

Marine mammals 🦭 are the silent engineers of the sea, playing a critical role in nutrient cycling, regulating marine food webs and driving the overall ocean productivity that sustains life on Earth.

These creatures are renowned for their intelligence, complex social lives and advanced bioacoustic communication. But their sensitivity makes them increasingly vulnerable to the mounting pressures of habitat loss, plastic pollution and the deadly threat of entanglement in fishing gear.🌊

Beyond these visible dangers, climate change, the disruptive roar of ships and industrial activities are disturbing the underwater silence of sanctuaries they call "home".💔
The health of our oceans rests on these guardians, making their protection an urgent necessity for us all. It is our shared responsibility to conserve them and our commitment today will lead to a resilient, thriving blue planet for the future.💙
