The staff of the Department of Oceanography and Marine Geology visited the research vessel of the Third Oceanographic Institute (TIO), Chinese Academy of Sciences docked in Colombo harbor recently. Navy officers in the Hydrography Department of Sri Lanka Navy also visited. We thank Dr. Qui Yun, the chief scientist, Caption and other staff of the ship for their wonderful hospitality. We would also like to thank Commander Bandara and Lieutenant Commander Faizal of SL Navy Hydrography Unit for facilitating this visit.

The newly constructed department complex of the Faculty of Fishers and Marine Sciences and Technology was officially commissioned by Senior Prof. Gamini Senanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, at 9.40 a.m. auspices time on 23rd November 2017. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nayana Alagiyawanna, Deans of faculties, council members, heads of departments, administrative staff and other academic and non-academic staff members of the university graced this historic occasion.

Grand Finale of the Orator of the year 2017 competition hosted by Faculty of Fishers and Marine Science and Technology was held at the auditorium of the faculty on 16th August 2017. The chief guest of the event was Senior Professor Gamini Senanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, while the Guest of Honor was Mr. Prem K. In line with the Ruhuna Invention and Innovation Exhibition (RIIE) -2017, the undergraduates of the Department of Oceanography and Marine Geology organized an exhibition stall at the Faculty premises in the Wellamadama, Matara on 17th & 18th May 2017. Many models, samples and posters related to marine sciences were on display. A large number of students from the schools in the southern province turned up for the exhibition. The department is thankful to the undergraduates for their valuable contribution to make this evet a success.

The inauguration ceremony for undergraduates enrolled in the Faculty of Fisheries of Marine Sciences and Technology was held at the auditorium of the Faculty on 28th February 2017. The Senior Professor Gamini Senanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna graced the occasion as the chief guest. The Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university Dr. A.M.N. Alagiyawanna, the Dean of the Faculty Dr. R.A. Maithreepala, other academic and nonacademic staff members of the faculty also participated

University of Ruhuna is the only university in South East Asia that has a specialization in Oceanography and Marine Geology. Graduates who passed out last year paid a visit to Mercmarine for a briefing session which was interactive.

This interactive session was held to enlighten them about the lucrative opportunities for them at sea aboard luxury cruise liners. MERCMARINE is now recruiting" environmental officers" for Carnival Maritime Group.

Staff members of the department recently visited the Polhena beach to assess its suitability and safety as a possible location for training undergraduates following “Snorkeling and Lifesaving” courses coming under the B.Sc degree program in Oceanography and Marine Geology. During the visit, a higher a priority was given to ensure the safety of the students. Different scenarios was contemplated to quickly respond during a medical emergency.
