The Department of Civil Engineering extends its sincere congratulations to Prof. K. M. C. Konthesingha on receiving the President’s Award for Scientific Research, a prestigious national recognition of research excellence.

The award has been conferred for the paper published in a Q1 journal. The title of the paper is “Performance Evaluation of Cement Mortar Produced with Manufactured Sand and Offshore Sand as Alternatives to River Sand”, published in Construction and Building Materials (Vol. 297, Article No. 123784). The research was authored by Mr. A. Branavan, Prof. K. M. C. Konthesingha, and Emeritus Prof. S. M. A. Nanayakkara.

The Department of Civil Engineering extends its heartiest congratulations to Professor Ganga Samarasekara on her promotion to Professor in Civil Engineering.

Prof. Ganga Samarasekara obtained her Ph.D. and M.Eng. degrees from Saitama University, Japan, and her B.Sc.Eng. (Hons) degree from the University of Moratuwa. Her academic specialization is in Transportation Engineering and Engineering Education, with research interests that include walkability in street networks, vehicle emissions, traffic calming, and geometric design.

Prof. Ganga Samarasekara has rendered exemplary service to the department, including a six-year tenure as Head of the Department, during which she provided strong leadership and strategic direction. This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of her academic excellence, dedicated leadership, and significant contributions to the field of engineering education and research.

The Department of Civil Engineering wishes Professor Ganga Samarasekara continued success and distinction in all her future academic and professional endeavours.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Former Head of Department

The Department of Civil Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, extends its sincere gratitude to our former Head of Department, Dr. Ganga Samarasekara, for her outstanding leadership and dedication over the past six years.

During her tenure, the department reached several remarkable milestones, including obtaining full recognition for the Civil Engineering specialization of the BSc Eng (Hons) degree program from the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL). Under her visionary guidance, the department also proudly graduated its first five batches of undergraduate students, along with the first cohort of postgraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering—marking yet another significant chapter in the department’s journey. The department deeply appreciates her leadership and support during the relocation process from temporary facilities to the newly constructed, state-of-the-art Faculty of Engineering complex.

Her unwavering commitment, strategic direction, and passion for excellence have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire both staff and students.
