Information is everywhere. Judgment is what sets you apart.

At the AAT Sri Lanka Conference 2026, "Precision to Power", held at Waters Edge, Battaramulla, the second technical session asked a hard question: what does an accountant add once AI can produce the reports?

Heshana Kuruppu, Group Director of Finance at David Pieris Group and Immediate Past President of CA Sri Lanka, pointed to the numbers behind the change. According to the World Economic Forum (2025):

🔹 86% expect AI to transform business by 2030
🔹 39% of core skills are expected to change
🔹 78 million new job types are projected globally

His key message was that historical reporting has already been largely automated. The value now lies in insight, influence and sound judgment. His 3I Model (Information, Insight, Influence) shows how raw data becomes decisions that matter, and his PAUSE Model (Purpose, Options and Assumptions, Uncertainty, Stakeholders, Test) offers a structured way to exercise that judgment.

In the "Govern to Grow" panel that followed, moderator Dhanath Fernando (Advocata Institute) was joined by Prasad Dasanayaka, Shivandini Liyanage and Prof. Sanath Wijesinghe. They covered Sri Lanka's digital tax journey, risk-based governance under the SEC Act No. 19 of 2021, and the new frontiers of data protection and AI regulation.

The panel agreed on one point: accountability cannot be outsourced to a machine.

From Precision to Power: the future belongs to those who go deep. 🎯

That was the heartbeat of the AAT Sri Lanka Conference 2026, held at Waters Edge, Battaramulla on 8 & 9 September — two days that reminded us why accounting isn't the end of a business conversation. It's the beginning of one.

A few ideas we're still thinking about:

When you go through financial statements, you are reading a balance sheet containing numbers of somebody else's dreams." — Prof. Dr. Poorva Ranjan, on why the accountant who reads between the numbers can help shape a business, not just document it.

On building a reputation, Dr. Lakmal Kulasekara reminded us that a brand is earned, not declared: "You must deliver the exact premium quality in practice that you describe in your stories."

A brand is a standard promise or value captured in a customer's heart." — Dr. Shanika Arsecularatne. And the number every leader should sit with: ~80% of revenue comes from the 20% who return.

Two-time Olympian Matthew Abeysinghe on winning in enterprise and sport alike: "Focus on being a doer who finds a way to get things done." Win the war, not every skirmish.

On AI and our profession? Steadying words: analytical tasks may be automated, but judgement is not. "The human always remains above AI."

And bringing the threads together, moderator Prof. Dr. Nagalingam Nagendrakumar closed with the thought that says it all: precision in one's craft, applied with intent, becomes influence — and influence, ultimately, becomes power.

The line that captured it all: "Don't go wide, go deep."

For AAT Sri Lanka, that's more than a theme. It's the journey we want every member to take — carrying world-class technical foundations into the room where decisions are made.
