Who is a Data Protection Officer, and where does the role fit within an organization?
A Data Protection Officer (DPO) is a designated or appointed professional who helps an organization manage its data protection responsibilities through guidance, oversight, and practical support.
The role goes beyond policy. A DPO may advise the organization and its employees on data protection requirements, support compliance obligations, build staff awareness, provide guidance on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), and support engagement with the Data Protection Authority.
Because data protection touches people, processes, governance, and risk, the DPO works across the organization, helping strengthen accountability and connect responsible data handling with day-to-day operations.
Understanding what a DPO does is an important step towards building stronger privacy practices and a more effective data protection culture.
