A successful and highly interactive workshop on “AI and the Libraries of the Future” was held on 3 September 2026 at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL), bringing together approximately 90 library professionals, academics, students, and other participants. The workshop provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, professional dialogue, and exploration of the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping the future of libraries and information services.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Lara Szypszak, Senior Reference Librarian and Acting Head of the European Reading Room at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., USA, under the Fulbright Specialist Programme. The sessions were conducted in English, with interpretation provided by Mr. A. M. Nahfees, Senior Assistant Librarian, SEUSL, enabling wider participation and interaction.
A significant feature of the programme was the participation of librarians representing school, public and college libraries, together with Library and Information Science students, SERLIN members, and staff of the SEUSL Library. Their active participation made the workshop particularly useful and interactive, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence in libraries.
The programme also created a valuable opportunity to strengthen professional friendship and collaboration between SEUSL Library and the Library of Congress, one of the world's leading libraries. The University Library expressed its great appreciation for this important connection and the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced professional from the Library of Congress.
The event was held with the participation of Prof. S. M. Junaideen, Vice-Chancellor of SEUSL, who joined the closing session and presented certificates to the participants.
The successful organization of the programme was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Mr. M. M. Rifaudeen, University Librarian, SEUSL and Chairman of SERLIN, together with the active support of the SERLIN Executive Committee member Mr. Mustaque Public Librarian and the SEUSL Library staff.
Special appreciation was extended to Mr. C. M. A. Munas, Senior Staff Assistant (Library Services), Mr. Saajith, Assistant Network Manager, Mr. Sajeer, Senior Assistant Librarian, Ms. Raksana, Mr. Fowsh, and the other members of the Library staff who contributed their time and effort to ensure the smooth and efficient conduct of the programme.
The University Library expressed its sincere gratitude to Dr. Patrick McNamara, Executive Director of the United States–Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission, for his valuable support in bringing the Fulbright Specialist to SEUSL and for the full support and sponsorship provided for the programme.
The workshop marked an important step in promoting AI awareness, professional development, international collaboration, and innovation in library services. SEUSL Library looks forward to continuing this valuable relationship with the Fulbright programme, the Library of Congress, and the wider library community.
