During the session, the final year undergraduates confidently presented and defended their research proposals before the academic panel, demonstrating their scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and enthusiasm for research. The event marked an important milestone in their undergraduate research journey and reflected the department’s continued commitment to academic excellence and research development.

The Department of Geology, in collaboration with the Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL), and the University Geological Society of the University of Peradeniya, successfully organized a Professional Workshop on Geotechnical Site Investigation and Characterization on August 29, 2025, at the Department of Geology.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Ajith Dissanayake (Brisbane, Australia), covering a wide range of topics including geotechnical site investigation techniques, real-world applications, field and laboratory methods, and the development of geotechnical site models.

This interactive and practical session provided participants with valuable insights into modern site investigation practices and their applications in the geotechnical field.

The Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, hosted a museum visit for school students on 18th July 2025, offering them an engaging introduction to the fundamentals of geology.

The session was led by Dr. Dilan Rathnayake, Temporary Lecturer, who provided students with insightful explanations on geological concepts and mineral identification, sparking curiosity and interest in Earth sciences.

An interactive session was also held, where students actively participated by asking questions to clarify their understanding, making the visit both educational and inspiring.

Led by the temporary academic staff, the interactive session offered students a rare opportunity to explore geological treasures, uncover ancient Earth stories, and spark curiosity about the science beneath our feet.

This initiative reflects the department's ongoing commitment to nuturing young minds and promoting geoscience education through meaningful outreach.

The Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, hosted a museum visit for students of Kingswood College, Kandy on 03rd July 2025, offering an engaging introduction to the fascinating world of Earth sciences.

Prof. Sanjeewa Malaviarachchi, Acting Head of the Department led an informative and interactive tour of the department museum, guiding students through exhibits on rocks, minerals, and dynamic geological processes.

This outreach initiative was designed to spark curiosity and encourage a deeper interest in the Earth sciences among young learners.

The Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, conducted the orientation programme for the 23rd batch on 23rd June 2025 at the Statistics and Computer Science Auditorium.

The session was led by Prof. Sanjeewa Malaviarachchi, Acting Head of the Department of Geology, focusing on an introduction to Geology as a discipline, career pathways, higher education opportunities, and the selection process for the Geology stream.

An interactive Q&A session allowed students to engage actively and clarify their interests and concerns as they step into their academic journey.

An insightful two-day visit to the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute was successfully organized for the 3000-level students of the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, under the guidance of Dr. Prasanna Dharmmapriya.

The department extends its sincere appreciation to Prof. Rohan Fernando, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute for granting permission to hold this valuable educational event.

This program, made possible with the support of Mr. Naleen Jayasinghe (Director – Research, Acting), Ms. Miurangi Chandrasena, and Mrs. Nadeeka Manthrirathna, included:

🔹 Interactive lectures on gem identification techniques
🔹 Hands-on demonstrations of basic and advanced analytical instruments used in gemology
🔹 A session on legal frameworks and socio-economic aspects of the gem industry in Sri Lanka

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications in gemology and to gain insight into the professional standards that guide the industry.
