The Department of Geology, in collaboration with the Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL), and the University Geological Society of the University of Peradeniya, successfully organized a Professional Workshop on Geotechnical Site Investigation and Characterization on August 29, 2025, at the Department of Geology.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Ajith Dissanayake (Brisbane, Australia), covering a wide range of topics including geotechnical site investigation techniques, real-world applications, field and laboratory methods, and the development of geotechnical site models.

This interactive and practical session provided participants with valuable insights into modern site investigation practices and their applications in the geotechnical field.

The Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, conducted the orientation programme for the 23rd batch on 23rd June 2025 at the Statistics and Computer Science Auditorium.

The session was led by Prof. Sanjeewa Malaviarachchi, Acting Head of the Department of Geology, focusing on an introduction to Geology as a discipline, career pathways, higher education opportunities, and the selection process for the Geology stream.

An insightful two-day visit to the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute was successfully organized for the 3000-level students of the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, under the guidance of Dr. Prasanna Dharmmapriya.

The department extends its sincere appreciation to Prof. Rohan Fernando, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute for granting permission to hold this valuable educational event.

This program, made possible with the support of Mr. Naleen Jayasinghe (Director – Research, Acting), Ms. Miurangi Chandrasena, and Mrs. Nadeeka Manthrirathna, included:

🔹 Interactive lectures on gem identification techniques
🔹 Hands-on demonstrations of basic and advanced analytical instruments used in gemology
🔹 A session on legal frameworks and socio-economic aspects of the gem industry in Sri Lanka

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications in gemology and to gain insight into the professional standards that guide the industry.
