The Centre for Research in Oral Cancer (CROC), Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, is proud to officially welcome renowned public figures Mr. Narada Bakmeewewwa and Ms. Thanuja Jayawardana as our Celebrity Ambassadors for Oral Cancer Prevention and Awareness.
On October 12, 2026, a special ceremony was held at the Faculty to present their Certificates of Recognition. Mr. Narada Bakmeewewwa was present to graciously accept the certificates on behalf of both himself and Ms. Thanuja Jayawardana.
This impactful initiative was conceptualized by Dr. Sumudu Madawala. We extend our deepest gratitude to him for his grateful idea. We would also like to thank our Director of CROC, Prof. Ruwan Jayasinghe, Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Shyama Banneheka, and CROC Secretary, Dr. Dilini Rathnayake, for their leadership and guidance. Forthcoming Ambassador to the government of Switzerland H.E Mr. Daniel Hunn, Head of mission at interim Olivier Praz of thee Swiss Embassy in Sri Lanka and SHA Geological Expert from DRR/WASH Dr. Yvonne Josy Mรผller met the Vice Chancellor Professor Terrence Madhujith on 06 th October, 2026 at the Vice Chancellorโ€™s Office.

The meeting was organized by Dr. Jagath Gunatilake of the Department of Geology, who is collaborating with a team of Swiss Geologists and National Building Research Institute (NBRI) on Ditwa Cyclone-affected landslides in Sri Lanka. The University of Peradeniya had the privilege of hosting *Wadaiko Daigen-gumi*, a renowned group of professional Japanese traditional drummers, on 8 October 2026, at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre.

Organised by the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, the captivating live performance brought together approximately ''530 audience members'', including university students, academic and non-academic staff, and schoolchildren from neighboring schools.

The performance showcased the vibrant rhythms, artistic excellence, and rich cultural heritage of Japan, providing the audience with a memorable cultural experience and strengthening the bonds of friendship and cultural exchange between Japan and Sri Lanka.

The University of Peradeniya extends its sincere appreciation to the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka and Wadaiko Daigen-gumi for this remarkable cultural event.

The University of Peradeniya received a generous donation from the Peradeniya Medical School Alumni Association - United Kingdom, helping restore facilities affected by the recent devastating cyclone and floods. Dr Ashan Gunarathne, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the University of Nottingham, UK, and President (2023-2026) of the Peradeniya Medical School Alumni Association UK (PeMSAA-UK), together with Dr Gayathri Watuge, Consultant Histopathologist and President Elect - PeMSAA-UK, visited the University to hand over essential donations aimed at supporting student welfare and institutional recovery. The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Terrance Madhujith, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Ranjith Pallegama, the Director of Physical Education Mr Samantha Wijesinghe, and the staff.

The Department of Nursing successfully held the Nursing Pledge Ceremony for the 2023/2024 undergraduate batch on 25th September 2026 at the Diamond Jubilee Hall, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya.
This yearโ€™s ceremony marked a significant milestone for the 2023/2024 batch of undergraduate nursing students, who have completed their first academic year and are now transitioning into advanced nursing practice.
In tribute to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, the Nightingale Lamp was ceremoniously lit, and her statue was garlanded. As a symbol of studentsโ€™ progression, they received their nursing caps and three-wicked lamps, representing knowledge, skilled hands, and a compassionate heart.
With pride and confidence, the students took the Nursing Pledge, affirming their commitment to the ethical and moral principles of the nursing profession.

The Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, warmly welcomed 100 new entrants of the 2025/2026 batch at a ceremony held on 5 October 2026 at the K. Bambaradeniya Auditorium.
The ceremony was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. W. M. T. Madhujith, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. R. W. Pallegama. Deans of other Faculties of the University, academic staff of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, administrative and non-academic staff of the University, and parents of the new students were also present.
Welcoming the new entrants, the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, Prof. Shyama Banneheka, highlighted the proud history and evolution of dental education in Sri Lanka and the Faculty's longstanding contribution to the development of the dental profession. He encouraged the students to make the best use of the opportunities available to them at the University while upholding the academic, professional and ethical values expected of a dental graduate.
