On 31st August 2026, the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, had the pleasure of welcoming three distinguished academics from Wales, United Kingdom, as part of an initiative to explore opportunities for international academic and research collaboration.

The visiting academics were Dr. Anne-Marie Coll, Associate Professor of Professional Practice at the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education, University of South Wales; Dr. Teresa Filipponi, Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition and a public health practitioner; and Dr. Ashra Khanom, Senior Research Fellow at Swansea Medical School and the โ€˜Gambling Harmsโ€™ Research Lead for Public Health Wales.

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, welcomed the first cohort of
students admitted to the university through the GCE Advanced Level 2025 examination
at a ceremony marking the commencement of their undergraduate studies.
The E/25 batch joins the Faculty of Engineering, the first engineering faculty in Sri
Lanka, which has a 76-year legacy in engineering education and has produced more
than 15,700 engineering graduates to date.

The University of Peradeniya officially inaugurated the Multidisciplinary Environmental and Health Research Centre (MEHRC) on 21 August 2026. Established under the University Research Council, MEHRC brings together expertise from across faculties to address pressing environmental and health challenges in Sri Lanka. The Centre will promote interdisciplinary research, strengthen student and early-career researcher development, support evidence-based policy and practice, and build lasting national and international partnerships. MEHRC aims to become a trusted platform that transforms environmental evidence into healthier, more resilient and sustainable communities across Sri Lanka and the wider region.

The University of Peradeniya marked a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey with the official inauguration of the CDB Server Room, CDB Computer Laboratory, CDB AI Laboratory, and CDB Seminar Room on 14 August 2026.

The new facilities were established following extensive damage caused to the Universityโ€™s Information Technology Center (ITC) during the recent Cyclone Ditwah disaster. The disaster resulted in the loss of critical ICT infrastructure, including servers, networking equipment, computer laboratories, and electrical systems, severely disrupting teaching, research, administrative functions, and digital services across the University. The total cost of restoring the damaged infrastructure was estimated at approximately LKR 115 million.

The Faculty of Management, University of Peradeniya, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. S. Maheswaran as the fifth Dean of the Faculty of Management. He officially assumed duties as Dean on 19 August 2026.

Dr. Maheswaran joined the University of Peradeniya on 25 February 2006 and currently serves as a Senior Lecturer โ€“ Grade I. He holds a B.Com. and MBA from the University of Peradeniya, PGDDE from IGNOU, India, and PhD from NTNU, Norway.

The Faculty warmly welcomes Dr. S. Maheswaran and wishes him every success in his new role and leadership of the Faculty.

University of Peradeniya Ranked No. 1 in Sri Lanka

In global university rankings, institutions are evaluated based on a range of indicators, including educational outcomes, graduate employability, faculty quality, and research performance.

According to the latest 2026 rankings published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the University of Peradeniya has been ranked No. 1 among universities in Sri Lanka. Out of 21,291 universities worldwide, the University of Peradeniya is ranked 1,695th, placing it among the top 8% of universities globally.

This achievement can be regarded as a significant recognition of the University of Peradeniyaโ€™s international-level performance in education and research, further highlighting its contribution and standing within the global higher education community.
