The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology(SLIIT) Relay Carnival 2026, an inter-university tournament was successfully held on 23rd March 2026 at the Malabe SLIIT Ground, showcasing athletic excellence, teamwork and competitive spirit. The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University athletics team (KDU athletics team) delivered a dominant performance, emerging as the Overall University Champions with 103 points. KDU secured the Men’s Championship with 52 points and the Women’s Championship with 51 points, highlighting exceptional consistency and strength. Outstanding performances across multiple events reinforced KDU’s success, as given below.

The much-anticipated Inter-Faculty Games 2026 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony at the KDU Indoor Stadium on 20th March 2026. The event marked the culmination of intense competitions that highlighted athletic talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship among students from various faculties.

The closing ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritime Pol, Bsc (DS) Also in attendance were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration) and Chairman of the Sports Council, Brigadier Pradeep Ratnayake RSP USP psc, along with Deans, Senior Military Officers, Faculty Coordinators, and Members of the Academia. The event commenced with a grand parade of the participants, setting an energetic and celebratory tone for the evening.

Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, in his address, commended the athletes for their dedication and perseverance, highlighting that the games are a testament to the strength, resilience, and unity of the students. He further stated that beyond victories and medals, it is the spirit of fair play and teamwork that truly defines this competition. He extended his appreciation to the organizing committee, faculty coordinators, coaches, and volunteers for ensuring the success of the event.

This year’s competition witnessed outstanding individual performances, particularly in swimming events, with several new records being established. SM Tennakoon delivered an exceptional performance, setting new records in the 800m Women’s Freestyle (12:30.37), 400m Women’s Freestyle (6:06.62), and 100m Women’s Butterfly (1:25.45).

KS Fernando also made a significant mark by setting a new record in the 200m Women’s Backstroke (03:36.63). In the men’s category, SD Alexander achieved a new record in the 200m Men’s Backstroke (02:42.27), while KAS Dalpathadu excelled in the 100m Men’s Backstroke with a time of 1:13.39.

Further highlighting the competitive spirit of the event, S Warsha set impressive records in the 66m Women’s Breaststroke (57.08) and 33m Women’s Breaststroke (22.22), along with a notable performance in the 33m Women’s Freestyle. Additionally, AMA Yinus demonstrated commendable skill by setting a new record in the 33m Men’s Freestyle.

The ceremony concluded with the Vice Chancellor’s closing remarks, emphasizing the importance of balancing academics and sports while upholding the values of discipline and teamwork. With an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, students departed with cherished memories and heightened anticipation for the next edition of the Inter-Faculty Games.

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) officially launched the Startup Today Magazine – 1st Edition, marking an important milestone in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation among university students and young entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka. Positioned as a “Gateway of Emerging Entrepreneurs to the Global Market,” the magazine captures the journey, impact, and growing ecosystem built through the Startup Today initiative.
The publication combines academic insight with real-world industry perspectives. It features key contributions, including the interview with the Vice Chancellor, along with thought leadership from Dr. Kalpana Ambepitiya, Lecturer-in-Charge of the KDU Entrepreneurship Club, whose work has been instrumental in transforming entrepreneurship education at KDU from a classroom-based approach into a nationally recognised experiential platform.

The KDU Inter-Faculty Swimming and Water Polo Championship 2026 was successfully held on 11th,14th, 16th, and 17th of March 2026 at the Swimming Pool KDU Rathmalana

This year’s championship marked a significant development in KDU aquatic sports with the introduction of Water Polo as a competitive event. This addition brought a new dimension to the tournament, emphasizing not only individual excellence but also teamwork, strategy, and coordination.

The championship brought together talented athletes from all faculties, showcasing exceptional skill, endurance, and sportsmanship in a highly competitive environment.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address delivered by the Director of CGEE, Dr. Nirosha Wedasinghe, under the esteemed leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS). The Cadet Government Investiture Ceremony 2026 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was held on 20 March 2026 at the university parade square. The ceremony was graced by Vice Chancellor of the university Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS). Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) Brigadier RK ARP Rathnayake RSP USP psc, along with the Deans of the Faculties, senior officers, military staff, and academic and non-academic staff. The event marked a significant milestone in recognizing the dedication and achievements of the Officer Cadets of the university.
The purpose of the ceremony was to acknowledge the progress and commitment shown by Officer Cadets in both their training and academic activities and to provide opportunity to exercise the leadership at the KDU. It also aimed to motivate other Officer Cadets to maintain high standards in academics, physical fitness, discipline, sports, club activities, and other extracurricular engagements. Officer Cadets who demonstrated outstanding performance in these areas over the past year were awarded Cadet Government appointments, as approved by the Board of Management.
During the ceremony, the Cadet Government for the year 2026 was officially declared, with 122 Officer Cadets from Intakes 40, 41, and 42 receiving appointments. The Cadet Government plays an important role in fostering leadership, responsibility, and discipline among both Officer Cadets and Day Scholars. By undertaking these responsibilities, the appointed cadets contribute to maintaining order, supporting university activities, and developing leadership qualities that will guide them in their future service to the nation.

We are honored to announce that 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗡𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝗥𝗦𝗣 has officially assumed duties as the 𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University – Southern Campus (KDUSC) on 11 March 2026.
